“The future of our world depends on the education of our
children. UBAM delivers educational excellence one book
at a time. We provide economic opportunity while fostering
strong family values. We touch the lives of children for a lifetime.”
That’s the mission statement of Usborne books. Founded in 1973, Usborne is a leader in entertaining, fun and colorful non-fiction books for children. Their books are available around the world, in English and 100 other languages. Distributed by direct sellers – usually moms – it’s a great income opportunity, as well, offering the flexible hours of operating your own business.
I was contacted by Jessica Russell, a teacher and parent of 2, about doing a review/giveaway. It was difficult to choose a product, there are so many! I’ve been struggling with Rosie in the car… When we first bought our van, I didn’t even tell her it had a DVD player! Then when we went on a long trip, we showed it to her, and she, of course, loved it. But we stuck to our rule that it would only be used for trips. Best of intentions, but it didn’t work out that way. Now, if I have a bad day and need a break, pop, open the DVD and throw in a movie. But I love playing games and talking with Rosie in the car! Sometimes I think that because we aren’t making eye contact (I do have to drive, after all!), it’s easier for her to talk about some subjects. When I saw the Usborne product, “100 Things To Do On A Trip”, I saw a possible solution. Something to keep Rosie busy, but not absorb her so much that she wouldn’t talk to me. And that’s exactly how it has worked out.
I love the games that come in the “100 Things To Do On A Trip”! The easy-to-wipe-off cards are the perfect size for a child. The activities are difficult enough to capture their interest, but not too complicated or difficult to keep them playing. Examples of games: Mazes, Shape Hunt, and Drawing. Jessica gave me this advice, “The first time you take them on a trip with you, you might give your child 5 or so of them at a time, so that at evenly spaced intervals on the way there and on the way back they are getting new cards, which keeps them fresh and exciting.  Once they’ve all been seen/used, a good way to use them for future trips is to punch a hole in the corner of each one and keep them on a metal binder ring, so they all stay together, and don’t end up all over the place!  My friend with two boys splits them onto two binder rings, and buys an extra marker, so each boy has a different set and then they can switch.”
