Moms don’t look like this any more!

Gone are the days when Mom would be waiting at the door for her kids to come home from school with a plate of goodies in her hand, a glass of milk on the table.  If you’re like us, you start your after-school-time with a ride in the car.  We always seem to be dashing here or there, to this activity or that.  Rosie doesn’t ride a bus, so she literally starts her after-school-time in the car.  And the first thing out of her mouth?  “I’m starving!  Can we drive-through somewhere?”   Cha ching.  My wallet answers, “No!”  But we can’t run to swimming, or dance class, or scouts without some kind of snack.

Rosie eats snacks in her car seat more often than I’d like to admit. This Lean Pocket is fun to eat, filling, and delicious.

Which brings up the second problem – eating in the car.  I don’t even want to know the statistics for how often Americans eat in their car.  I’m sure it’s crazy high.  We really do try to eat meals at home, but snacks?  No way.  I just can’t work out how to sit down at the table after school for a snack every day.

Enter Hot Pockets!  I’m sure I’ve tried them in the past, but I hadn’t had them for years.  Hot Pockets are a great back to school snacks solution for those days when you are running and need a filling snack for the kids that they can eat in the car.  Throw one in the microwave before you leave home or just before the kids are getting off the bus.

There are a bazillion varieties of Hot Pockets – something for everyone!  If you haven’t looked for them lately, stop by the freezer section of your Walmart store.  There are two main kinds – Hot Pockets and Lean Pockets.  Lean Pockets have 9 grams of fat or less, o grams of trans fat and 360 calories or less.

New Hot Pocket Snackers are smaller, triangle-shaped pockets and come in 6 flavors!

Hot Pocket SideShots are round sandwiches and also come in 6 different flavor varieties.

There are more than just the rectangular pocket sandwiches you may have known – now there are Snackers (smaller triangle shaped pockets)  and Sideshots (little round pockets).  And the bread comes in different types too!  Whole grain, garlic, even pretzel bread!  The flavor choices really expand the options with pizza, cheese, beef, chicken, mexican and more.

I found a HUGE selection of Hot Pockets and Lean Pockets in the freezer section of my Walmart.

When I went to the freezer section at our Walmart to buy some Hot Pockets, I decided right away to go with Lean Pockets.  We are always trying to watch our calories…  That narrows down the choice a little, but there are still tons of options!  I was excited about the pretzel bread variety – I love pretzel bread.  I’m always looking for snack ideas, these are perfect!

I loved the Pretzel Bread Lean Pockets!

The pretzel bread is such a beautiful color.

I knew Sean would like the Philly Steak and guessed Rosie would love the meatball.  I ended up with

  • Italian Style Meatballs with Reduced Fat Mozzarella
  • Pepperoni Pizza in a Seasoned Garlic Crust
  • Philly Steak and Low Fat Cheese
  • Culinary Creations – Garlic Chicken White Pizza
  • Whole Grain with Hickory Smoked Ham and Reduced Fat Cheddar
  • Pretzel Bread Spinach and Three Cheese

and then how could I forget!  Hot Pockets and Lean Pockets also have Breakfast flavors!  I picked up these:

  • Applewood Bacon, Egg, and Cheese
  • Ham, Egg and Cheese

I couldn’t wait to try some of the flavors, so when my parents came over for Sunday brunch, we had a Hot Pockets taste test!  (Yes, my family is very supportive of my blog)  My mom was a bit reluctant, but admitted at the end that she enjoyed it much more than she expected!

Our Hot Pockets Snacks Taste Test!

Hot Pockets are easy enough for your kids to make themselves, if they are old enough to use the microwave.

Don’t you love a snack that kids can make themselves?!

This is the Italian Meatball (on the left) and Garlic Chicken White Pizza (on the right). You can see the difference in the breads.

So on those crazy-busy-running-around days, I’m going to skip the drive through and go with Lean Pockets!
