What It’s About

Big Sky Country is the first in Linda Lael Miller’s newest series. Have you read any of her books? My favorite aspect of her writing is the way she creates a community of characters. Families, friends, neighbors… Miller’s books are as much about relationships as they are about the plotline.

In Big Sky Country, Miller introduces her readers to the town of Parable, Montana. Well, of course, Montana, slapping forehead, it’s big sky country, after all. The main characters are Sheriff Slade Barlow and Joslyn Kirk. Neither is looking for romance but they are thrown together again and again and seem to have a connection. Relationships and family are never neatly tied with a storybook bow, and Miller explores the complications of parents and their children, brothers – legitimate and illegitimate, and small town neighbors.

When Slade’s biological father dies, his will changes everything for Slade. His father never acknowledged him while he was alive, but now he is on equal – at least financially – footing with the man who lived his whole life as his father’s son. The brothers had very different upbringings and now they are forced to cooperate or at least make one very big decision together.

Although the sins of fathers should not be visited on their children, Josyln Kirk is trying to anonymously make amends for the sins of her stepfather. Many people in the small town invested money they could not afford to lose, and because of her stepfather, their lives were changed forever when the money disappeared. But Joslyn has the courage to return to Parable and finds more understanding and acceptance than she’s hoped for.

About the Author

From Miller’s website:  “Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold FLETCHER’S WOMAN in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.”

What Other’s Are Saying

“Linda Lael Miller creates vibrant characters and stories I defy you to forget.” – New York Times bestselling author, Debbie Macomber.

“(Miller) is one of the finest American writers in the genre.” – RT Book Reviews

My Take

I couldn’t put this book down! Don’t we all dream of the day when a will-reading hands us a financial fortune? Don’t we all dream of the day when a handsome cowboy will sweep us off our feet? C’mon, you know you do! Miller spins a tale with skill and romantic threads that keep you turning pages as quickly as you can. At the end of the book, you are thankful that it’s a series because you want to read more about these characters she has described so deeply that you feel like they are your friends, family and neighbors!
