“No one knows more about aging than a soap opera actress who started out as the star; then became the mother of the star; and then became the G-R-A-N-D-M-O-T-H-E-R of the star.” When Tina Sloan started on Guiding Light, she turned heads, garnered interesting and controversial story lines – she was the blonde, saying, “It’s all about ME.” But then as she aged, things began to change and she became more and more invisible and eyes turned to the young stars.
In Tina Sloan’s own words, “This book is about how I learned to navigate the desert of aging with my dignity, sanity, and sense of style intact (and, against all Hollywood rules, WITHOUT plastic surgery). It is about how we can find the courage to transform ourselves and learn to twinkle again, even after the lights have dimmed. .. I’ve made my own rules and found a way to embrace those years as both an enormous test of what I’m made of, and a gift that brings new freedoms, pleasures, and possibilities — and yes, great shoes… And on occasion, I still wear the high, high heels…. Ultimately we wear high heels, because they bring us closer to the stars!”
Tina eventually faces issues of aging – weight gain, caring for aging parents, romance, and adjusting to her aging looks and diminishing career – with grace. She tells us what she went through, what she thought, and what she thinks about it now. In Changing Shoes, we can share her journey, complete with the laughter and the tears. By reading about Tina Sloan’s experiences and lessons-learned, we can find the tools we’ll need to, not only survive, but to thrive as we age.
