Book Giveaway: Changing Shoes by Tina Sloan, star of Guiding Light (US/Canada)

ABOUT THE BOOK:

“No one knows more about aging than a soap opera actress who started out as the star; then became the mother of the star; and then became the G-R-A-N-D-M-O-T-H-E-R of the star.”  When Tina Sloan started on Guiding Light, she turned heads, garnered interesting and controversial story lines – she was the blonde, saying, “It’s all about ME.”  But then as she aged, things began to change and she became more and more invisible and eyes turned to the young stars.

In Tina Sloan’s own words, “This book is about how I learned to navigate the desert of aging with my dignity, sanity, and sense of style intact (and, against all Hollywood rules, WITHOUT plastic surgery).  It is about how we can find the courage to transform ourselves and learn to twinkle again, even after the lights have dimmed. .. I’ve made my own rules and found a way to embrace those years as both an enormous test of what I’m made of, and a gift that brings new freedoms, pleasures, and possibilities — and yes, great shoes… And on occasion, I still wear the high, high heels…. Ultimately we wear high heels, because they bring us closer to the stars!”

Tina eventually faces issues of aging – weight gain, caring for aging parents, romance, and adjusting to her aging looks and diminishing career – with grace.  She tells us what she went through, what she thought, and what she thinks about it now.  In Changing Shoes, we can share her journey, complete with the laughter and the tears.  By reading about Tina Sloan’s experiences and lessons-learned, we can find the tools we’ll need to, not only survive, but to thrive as we age.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Tina Sloan enjoyed a three and a half decade-long career as a soap actress playing Lillian Raines on Guiding Light. Tina is also a speaker, author, playwright, and theatrical actress. Her latest film is BLACK SWAN with Natalie Portman. Tina’s newest incarnation is as co-author and star of her one-woman show, CHANGING SHOES, which she is currently touring across the United States.

MY TAKE ON THE BOOK:

I’m a soap opera fan and I especially enjoyed the behind-the-scenes peek into the workings of a show.  There are quite a few very funny stories that will have you laughing out loud.
Tina Sloan speaks from her heart in this book and it is clear that she is being honest and sharing inner thoughts/emotions that most women feel at one time or another.  When she talks about gaining weight and the feelings that you encounter and your body changes, it is clear that she is writing from her heart.
It’s funny because I just watched the movie, Secretariat, where Penny Chenery gets the advice from her father to “Let him run his own race.”  She learns that if Secretariat is allowed to stay in the back of the pack at the start of a race, that he will ultimately surge ahead and claim the lead.  It’s more stressful for her to watch a race like that, but it’s how he runs.   Rather than try to change him, and despite the objections of her husband and brother, Penny Chenery stands up for herself, and for her horse.  This is the same message that Tina is writing in this book.  She urges the reader to follow their own path, to run their own race.
Using her own experiences to illustrate her advice, Tina gives us a roadmap for aging with grace and dignity.

WHAT OTHER’S ARE SAYING:

“(Tina) shows us that even though our roles as actress, wife, daughter, and mother may change as time goes on, with the right attitude – and shoes – we can stay sexy and relevant and take on new challenges, whether we’re dancing with the stars or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.”Susan Lucci, Emmy-winning star of All My Children

Tina Sloan LOVES shoes – what woman doesn’t!  But her feeling that the right pair makes you feel really special becomes a clever metaphor for stepping into life’s ups and downs with a healthy attitude.  “Changing Shoes” is a breezy, thoughtful perspective on how to enjoy life fully.” – Arie L. Kopelman, vice chairman of Chanel, Inc.
