What makes a good suspense book?

False Accusations

Love Triangle

The novel, Political Suicide, by New York Times Best-selling author, Michael Palmer has all that and more! The main character is Lou Welcome. Palmer introduced him to readers in his hit, Oath of Office. (I haven’t read Oath of Office, but after finishing Political Suicide and loving it, I’m going to be looking for Oath of Office at the library!) Lou is a doctor who has struggled with addiction and now helps other doctors who are in danger of losing their medical licenses because of drug or alcohol problems. Against policy, one of his clients is a friend, Dr. McHugh. When McHugh calls Lou to tell him that he is about to be arrested for murder, Lou rushes to try to help. McHugh has been drinking again and blacked out. Whether McHugh murdered his lover’s husband is the question Lou finds himself trying to solve to be able to help his friend. Along with McHugh’s attorney, Sarah Cooper, Lou become entangled in conspiracy theories and finds himself dangerously investigating an elite military unit known as Mantis.

My Take

Political Suicide is one of the more complex, interesting, and exciting suspense novels that I’ve read in the past year. I enjoyed not only the storyline, which kept me guessing at every turn, but also the characters and how they related to each other. Palmer addressed loyalty and trust between parent and child, long-time friends, respected colleagues, and members of the military. While readers are taken on a wild adventure to discover the truth about who murdered a prominent politician, we are treated to insights into the relationship of respected friends, new attractions, and true heroism. I couldn’t stop reading! While the story gets quite complicated and new developments are revealed quickly, the character development was so complete that it was easy to keep track of the different twists and turns in the plot. If you love a good mystery or suspense novel, I highly recommend reading, Political Suicide by Michael Palmer.

On his blog, Michael Palmer wrote that he came up with the storyline for Political Suicide after reading an article that put forth the theory that suicide bombers have something chemically altered in their brain that keeps them from experiencing fear. I won’t give away the story, but there are some very interesting medical and philosophical questions that make this book a fascinating read.
