ABOUT THE BOOK:

(from the back cover) “ It’s 1936 and Kate Merritt works hard to keep her family together.  Her father has slipped into alcoholism, her mother is trying to come to grips with their dire financial situation, and her sisters seem to remain blissfully oblivious to all of it.  Kate could never have imagined that a dirty, abandoned little girl named Lorena Birdsong would be just what her family needs.”

When Lorena meets Kate, she thinks an angel has come to save her.  “Lorena laid her head down on Kate’s shoulder.  ‘You smell like an angel.’  ‘Oh really?  And what does an angel smell like?’  ‘You,’ Lorena murmured.”  Kate may not be an angel, but she takes Lorena under her wing.  It is so heart-warming to read about the love and protectiveness of this brave little girl.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ann H. Gabhart is a best-selling author.  Her Shaker stories include, The Outsider, The Believer and The Seeker.

Angel Sister is a special novel for Ann, it is based loosely on her mother’s memories.  It is a story of her heart.
MY TAKE ON THE BOOK:

This book grabbed me from the first page and held my interest to the end.  Something about the style of writing and the story-telling quality pulled me into this book.  I wasn’t surprised to read at the end that it was loosely based on the author’s family.  It did seem very personal.

The character development was deep and powerful.  I felt like I could see little Kate and her mother especially.  Then when the character of Lorena was brought in to the story, the description of that little girl was so vivid that I wanted to hug her!
The story of Kate’s father and his brother and their father is interwoven throughout the book.  There are flashbacks that give us background on Victor and how secrets of the past affect the present.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story and especially to mothers, daughters, and sisters.

WHAT OTHER’S ARE SAYING:

“What a jewel of a story.  Like a Kentucky summer, Angel Sister starts slow and easy but by the end, roars along, leaving the reader breathless and wanting more.” – Lauraine Snelling, author of the Red River Series

I learned that the background of the story is loosely based on her mother’s memories of growing up in the 1930’s. This sounds like a wonderful endearing story. I can’t wait to read it!
