The story starts as Lena is being released from prison for stealing money from a church. Her side of the story is that she was innocent and framed by her lying husband. But not even her parents believe her. While she was in prison, they died, and with nothing left for her in her home town, Lena turns over the details of her future to a volunteer social worker at the prison. “I want a fresh start in a new town.”
Mrs. Standfield, the social worker planning Lena’s future, sends her to New Haven, where a job at Harrington’s department store is waiting for her. With limited funds, almost no belongings, and no friends, Lena heads to New Haven.
This is a wonderful story to read at Christmas. It’s a story of friendship and the true Christmas spirit. I had a hard time putting it down. It was a bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. The author has a very easy-to-read style that makes reading her stories a joy. Melody Carlson is excellent at creating interesting characters. I find myself caring about what happens to them as though they were old friends. In the style of Debbie Macomber, Melody Carlson creates a community of people that she writes about – I want to move to New Haven and you will too.
Reading Christian fiction is a pleasure for me. There is no violence or profanity. I found Christian fiction about ten years ago and now it’s difficult for me to read other genres. I still like action, suspense, and who-done-it stories but now, the darkness and profanity of mainstream fiction seems unnecessary.
If you want to get into the Christmas spirit and enjoy a good story, pick up Christmas at Harrington’s! It would also make a thoughtful gift for someone special in your life.
The author, Melody Carlson, also wrote Premiere and Catwalk which I reviewed. She has written more than 200 books for teens, women, and children. Before publishing, Melody traveled around the world, volunteered in teen ministry, taught preschool, raised two sons, and worked briefly in interior design and later in international adoption. “I think real-life experiences inspire the best fiction,†she says.
