Book Review and Giveaway: Devotion, a Memoir by Dani Shapiro

ABOUT THE BOOK:

(from the back cover)  “Settling into the responsibilities and routines of adulthood, Dani Shapiro found herself with more questions than answers.  Was this all life was – a hodgepodge of errands, dinner dates, e-mails, meetings, to-do lists?  What did it all mean?  Having grown up in a deeply religious and traditional family.  Shapiro had no personal sense of faith, despite her repeated attempts to create a connection to something greater.  Set adrift by loss – her father’s early death, the life-threatening illness of her infant son, her troubled relationship with her mother – she recognized the challenge at the heart of her anxiety:  What did she believe?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

This is Dani’s second memoir, her first, entitled Slow Motion, explored her early twenties – a time of rebellion.  She has also written five novels, including Black & White and Family History.  She has taught in the writing programs at Columbia, NYU, The New School and Wesleyan University, and she is co-founder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano, Italy.  She lives with her family in Litchfield County, Conneticut.

MY TAKE ON THE BOOK:

I’ve only read a few memoirs and they seemed to be a history of a person’s life.  A story.  This is very different, although you learn the story of Dani Shapiro’s life along the way, this is more of a personal journal.  You go inside Dani’s head and heart.  It is so very personal.  She shares deeply personal thoughts and feelings.
I loved reading this book, it was difficult to put down.  When someone risks sharing their inner feelings with you, it’s almost as if you can’t walk away.  Putting down the book felt like hanging up on a sister, sharing her fears and hopes.
By reading about Dani Shapiro’s struggles, you can learn to appreciate and empathize with people who deal on a daily basis with physical challenges and loss.  If you have experienced those, you will find a detailed iteration of the journey you yourself have traveled.
Although easy to read, this book is not a light, fun easy read.  You find yourself wanting to read slowly, wanting to stop and think about what you’ve read, comparing it to your own life and life choices.  I’m going to be headed to the library to look for Dani’s first book, Slow Motion.
