In the style of the television series, Damages, The Eden Prescription is a suspense thriller with twists and turns; hidden alliances; complex relationships, and secret societies.  Written by scientist and inventor, Ethan Evers, this story will have you on the edge of your seat.  The action takes the characters all around the world and in every dangerous situation you can imagine.  Like James Bond stories, the technology of surveillance, protection and weaponry is incredible.

From the back cover, “What if the ultimate treatment for cancer was closer that most of us realize?  A silent revolution has been unfolding recently in the science of natural medicine, bringing us so close to the answer – far too close, for some.  Chromogen employee Annika Guthrie… joins forces with the maverick but genius cancer researcher Dr. Elliott Lindell, even though he works with Mitogenica – Chromogen’s fiercest competitor.  Together, they formulate a cocktail of natural supplements which Annika secretly gives to patients in Chromogen’s latest drug trial.  The cocktail works so well, it threatens to undermine Chromogen’s next billion dollar chemo drug, and Annika’s world quickly falls apart.  Her wards start dying from everything but their cancer, and Dr. Lindell disappears on the eve of his most critical experiment.  Annika soon finds she is the only one left who can recover what remains of Dr. Lindell’s work – and that she is racing against someone far larger and more deadly than her worst fears.”

Character development in The Eden Prescription doesn’t suffer from all the action.  The characters are described so vividly, I could picture them easily in my mind and felt as if I could predict how they would react in the situations they were thrown into.  The main character, Annika Gutherie, is motivated to save lives but finds herself in danger as large pharmaceutical companies, with their all-encompassing profit motive, block her efforts.  “Although (doctors) baffled and fascinated by the herbal treatments and how well they had worked for Annika’s father, none of his doctors took the time to find out about it, or even took it seriously… Annika had made herself the promise that someday she would bring to someone else the same gift of prolonged life that the Baumgartner’s had brought to her father.  Perhaps Peter was right.  Maybe it did all stem from her father.  But there was nothing wrong with that.  And many things very right about it.”

I couldn’t put this book down, the structure of switching from location to location and character to character, made it feel fast-paced and adventurous.  The chase scenes were written so vividly that it truly felt like I was watching a movie or tv series.

The Eden Prescription is author Ethan Evers’ first book.  He has a PhD in Applied Science and received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management.  He is the inventor of technologies holding over 30 international patents.  Like his main character, he become fascinated by natural treatments for cancer when a family member tried it.  He discovered that mass media and the cancer industry are ignoring this treatment option.  The Eden Prescription was award a Kirkus Star, a Five Star Review from ForeWord Clarion, and a Bronze Medal (Living Now Awards, 2011).
