ABOUT THE BOOK:

(from book cover) “ Late in the summer of 1877, as the Russian cavalry descends on the defenseless Ottoman outpost of Constanta, a flock of purple and white hoopoes suddenly appears over the town, and Eleanora Cohen is ushered into the world by a mysterious pair of Tartar midwives who arrive just minutes before her birth.  “They had read the signs, they said; a sea of horses, a conference of birds, the North star in alignment with the moon.  It was a prophecy that their last king had given on his deathwatch.“  But joy is mixed with tragedy, for Eleonora’s mother dies soon after the birth.

When her father, Yakob, sets off by boat for Stamboul on business, eight-year old Eleonora, unable to bear the separation, stows away in one of his trunks.  On the shores of the Bosporus, in the house of her father’s business partner Moncef Bey, a new life awaits.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

This is a first novel by Dana Precious and I’m hoping it won’t be the last! Dana grew up in Michigan, attending Michigan State University. After This is Michael David Lukas’ debut novel.  He has been a Fulbright scholar in Turkey, a late-shift proofreader in Tel Aviv, and a Rotary scholar in Tunisia.  He is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Maryland. But writing in his calling, “It is an honor and pleasure.”  When asked if he had found his direction, he responded with candid honesty and humor, saying, “I wake up every morning feeling blessed that I get to spend my day writing…. Plus, my commute is less than five feet.”
Lukas currently lives in Oakland, less than a mile from where he was born.  When he isn’t writing, he teaches creative writing to third and fourth graders.  He describes the teaching as a joy and is amazed by the children’s imaginations.

MY TAKE ON THE BOOK:
As soon as I saw the book, I knew it was going to be a unique and imaginative read.  It came in a purple envelope, closed with an unusual seal.  When I opened the purple wrapping, I found a book with uneven edges and made with a rich but soft paper.  The cover and pages have a different texture than you usually see in books.
The presentation and first impression of the book, proved to be prophetic – it was a unique and richly textured, imaginative story.  That unfolded and unwrapped itself softly but royally.  The main character is intriguing and lovable.  She has an amazing capacity for learning but is sweetly innocent.  Her passion is reading and ultimately uses what she has read to draw analogies and formulate advice that may well change the course of history.
I enjoyed reading this book very much.  The abilities of the main character are interesting and exciting.  Not only does she have an incredibly brilliant mind, but she also has a special connection with animals.  It’s different that the type of book that I usually read, I think I can say I’ve never read anything quite like it.  In some ways, it reminded me of The Chronicles of Narnia and Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, but it is truly unique.
WHAT OTHER’S ARE SAYING:

“I fell in love at first read with this marvelously evocative, irresistible novel…” – Terry Karten, Executive Editor, Harper Collins Publishers
“The Oracle of Stamboul is a marvelously evocative, magical historical novel that will transport readers to another time and place—romantic, exotic, yet remarkably similar to our own.” – Amazon.com Review
