*Happy sigh*, I love suspense novels!  I just finished “Vanished” by Irene Hannon and it reminds me how much I love fiction that has you turning the pages as fast as you can… because you can’t wait to see what happens… but reluctant to finish it because it is just that good. Irene Hannon is a master story-teller that knows how to set the scene, draw you in and then add the danger.

In “Vanished”, Hannon expertly starts off with a mysterious event on a dark, rainy night.  And “click”, you know you’re not going to be putting this book down unless a crafty seven year old pries it out of your hands and says that seven syllable, “Mah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, om!” The main characters are a Pulitzer-nominated reporter and an ex-homicide detective.  Smart, brave, and exciting.  Add that they are both single and you have chemistry as well.

The official genre of the book, Vanished, is “Romantic Suspense” but I put it more in the “Suspense” category.  Somehow “Romance” suggests a weak heroine to me.  And sappy.  But Irene Hannon creates strong, smart, and courageous heroines that happen to fall in love. Okay, sorry, I’ve been wandering.  Story line!  Reporter Moira Harrison (yes, an Irish redhead) is driving on a rainy, dark night and suddenly she sees someone standing in the road in front of her.  She slams on the brakes, her car skids, hitting the person then careening off into a tree. Moira is in and out of consciousness and relieved when a Good Samaritan helps her.  But then Moira blacks out again and when she wakes up it’s an hour later and the Good Samaritan and the accident victim have both mysteriously disappeared!  Everyone, including the police think she must have dreamed it all.  When Moira is haunted by the memory of the woman’s eyes just before the car hit her, Moira hires a private investigator to try and figure out what happened. The story that follows is will keep you on the edge of your seat.  The ending had me in tears (can’t tell you why, it’ll spoil the story).
