Maxine Clark and her friend, Katie

At one of the Disney Social Media Moms Celebrations, I was fortunate to listen to an amazing speaker that truly touched my heart, Maxine Clark. Maxine is the founder and chief executive bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop. She told the story of how she started Build-A-Bear Workshop and what it has meant to so many children over the years.

One of those children is my daughter. Build-A-Bear Workshop is a special treat for her and continues to delight her time after time. I always listen carefully when the person helping her with her bear asks, “How many bears do you have?” My daughter’s eyes get very big and she says, “A LOT”. My husband shakes his head, and still can’t conceive of why a little girl would want so many “stuffies”, as she calls them.  But each one is special to her.

BAB Birthday Party 2010

A special birthday at Build-A-Bear Workshop

We even celebrated a birthday at Build-A-Bear Workshop.  Which, by the way, I highly recommend.  You don’t have to clean your house – before or after, the budget is set ahead of time, it’s great for girls and boys, and the kids LOVE it.  Even years later and a mom will come up to me and say, “My son still plays with the bear he made at your daughter’s party.”

“At Build-A-Bear Workshop, we are continually innovating to provide breakthrough experiences and products for today’s generation of tech-savvy Guests,” said Maxine Clark, founder and chief executive bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop.

I can’t wait to see one of the newly imagined stores that Build-A-Bear is rolling out around the country.  One is opening near me in Orland Park on May 3rd.  It includes an interactive storefront that is enabled by Microsoft’s Kinect technology and interactive touch elements.  Guests can play games and view the newest products.  I’m excited about the innovations to the Fluff Station.  My daughter loves brushing and fluffing her new pets, every time.  Now that experience will be even more interactive.  There are additional stations, as well, that allow each child (of any age!) to personalize their new friend.

Another thing to love about Build-A-Bear Workshop is their charitable work.  At the grand opening of the Orland Park store, the first 100 guests are invited to make a special bear for free that will be donated to Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation.  There will be family-friendly entertainment throughout the day, including appearances by Bearemy!
