Christmas season
My prettiest dress, my shiniest shoes
Going into the city, tall buildings, hustle and bustle
The decorations, the bright colors, the fancy elevator
Wow, the giant tree, the sparkling lights
The white tablecloths, silver and china
Mommy speaking in hushed tones and treating me like a princess
It’s like a fairy tale.
Those are my memories of the times my mom and I would go into Chicago for lunch at the Walnut Room, under the great tree. Â Now that I have a daughter of my own, I continue the tradition that gave me so many special feelings. Â Every year, during the Christmas season we have a special day in the city. Â We dress in our very best and go to one of the most beautiful department stores in the world. Â It started as Marshall Field’s – can you picture those dark green shopping bags? – and now it’s Macy’s. Â Customers would write their orders for Chicken Pot Pie or Field’s Special themselves and hand them to servers wearing white gloves. Â Things have changed over the years but the feelings are still the same.
Chicago has some of the most amazing architecture, museums, plays, restaurants and more.

I remember going down to Marshall Field’s and eating under the tree. It is different now that it is Macy’s.
Such awesome memories… I agree, it is different. For me, some things are improvements but other things I miss. Change!
Chicago is such an amazing city.
It’s got a place in my heart!
Wow what a beautiful city. This photo is taking me to 5 years back. I still can remember the lovely memories. Thanks for sharing.
