Whether you are Mexican or just love Mexican food, Cinco de Mayo is a fun holiday to celebrate and a great excuse for a party!  Here are some tips for spicing up your Cinco de Maya celebration!

  • Decorations make any party special and fun!  Cinco de Maya is a colorful holiday, incorporating all the colors of the rainbow.  Put away the monochromatic look and go for bright, brighter, and brightest.  I found some striped decorations at Target that worked well for this party.  They came in yellow/coral and blue/green.  I noticed in several home decorating catalogs this spring that the blue/green theme is hot this year, but I fell in love with the shades on the yellow/coral one!
  • Coloring Pages for Sombrero and Chili Garland

Any party with kids is more fun when you do crafts.  Coloring sheets are an easy choice because they don’t require close supervision.  Just set out the sheets and a box of crayons and you are good to go.  The kids can do them whenever it fits in with all the other activities.  Go to for this fun Sombrero and Chili Paper Coloring Page Template.

  • Combine craft activities and decorations with this fun idea!  Once the kids have colored the coloring sheets, have the older ones cut out the sombrero’s and chili peppers.  Using a hole punch and colorful ribbon, you can make a fun garland to decorate your party!
  • Pinatas are always a treat and fit in well with Cinco de Mayo.  The traditional donkey pinata or maybe spice it up with a chili pepper!  If you are worried that hitting the pinata with a stick may get out of control, or you don’t have the space, look for a “string” pinata.  Each child pulls out a string instead of hitting and the candy spills out when enough strings have been removed and you hit the “lucky” one!
  • Music fills the room and adds motion to your party.  Who can resist moving to a great beat?  Before your party, put together a fun playlist.  You can mix theme-music with standard, popular favorites.  The theme music is always special but can be over-the-top if you have it playing the whole time.
  • Great food is a must!  We tried Farm Rich Queso Cheese Bites for the first time Friday and they were a huge hit!  My husband said, “are these a blog review?”  When I said, yes, he replied, “they have a BIG thumbs up from me!”  The kids liked them too, even though they were a bit spicy, it was just enough without being too much heat.
The Farm Rich Queso Cheese Bites are creamy white, queso-filled, breaded, delicious little treats.  They come out of the oven or fryer in just minutes, crisp and toasty on the outside, meltingly cheesy on the inside.  Perfect for an after-school snack, party appetizer, or just anytime hunger calls.  I served them with dips – just ketchup, barbeque sauce, and ranch dressing – straight out of the bottles.

Love the party ideas…I think I’ll give them a try this weekend! I’m throwing a Cinco party that should be lots of fun…got this super-cute little mini sombreros from a local store, stocked up on tequila, have all the salsas anyone could ever want…I think we’re just about ready! Some queso bites are going to make a great addition, I hope!
