Darkness.

Shouting.

Door Slams.

Mama whispers, “Shhhh, he’s gone.  I found a place to help us, we’re leaving.”

I didn’t say goodbye.

Scared, sad, happy, scared.

When I read that Walmart and Mars Candy wanted to donate a basket of Halloween treats to a charity (delivered by a blogger), I immediately thought of the children at a local shelter, The Caring Place.  The Caring Place provides service and shelter to victims of violence and their children.  They are in a confidential location to protect them and keep them safe.  For this reason, I thought it might be difficult for the children to do traditional trick-or-treating on Halloween.  The children have often been through traumatic events and being able to have some celebration or bit of normalcy, I imagine would be welcome and therapeutic.

I applied for the “shopportunity” that would allow me to give a basket of goodies to The Caring Place and I was so excited when I found out I was approved!  My daughter heard me shout, “YES!” and asked why I was happy.  I told her that there were some children who couldn’t trick-or-treat because they had to leave their homes and that we were going to be able to give them Halloween treats.  Rosie is a very kind-hearted child and her smile was so precious when she thought of helping other children!

I went through my “basket goodies” and Halloween decorations to see if there was anything I could use to create a basket for the children of The Caring Place.  In the past, I’ve created arrangements of items for charity silent auctions.  It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing – I like being creative and making things “pretty”!   I have a stash of shred, tissue paper, etc. that I use for making the gift baskets.  But all I could find for this occasion was some orange shred.  My fingers were crossed that I could find some things at Walmart.  Wait until you see!

I love having seasonal items when you first walk in - nice reminder!

I headed out to Walmart and saw the Halloween treats as soon as I walked in the door.  It was so fun to shop for these kids!  I picked up some mini- candy Snickers – don’t you have to have Snickers for Halloween?    And M&Ms – gotta have M&Ms.

I wanted to put some decorative Halloween fun items for the kids in the basket too, so I headed to the Halloween section.

Easy to find the Halloween section!

Walmart did some great signage and decorating to make the Halloween section easy to find and fun to shop in.  Everything was well-stocked and there was a great selection of items.

Large Selection

I picked up some fun vampire teeth, bracelets, Halloween pencils, and glow bracelets that added a great decorative touch to the basket.

Oh, and the “basket”!  Walmart has some great bowls that are so cute.  They are made for you to use to hand out candy but there are also other uses like this one :)

Shred filled the bowl nicely and then the added Halloween treats made up a great gift, didn’t it?

Doesn't this make you smile?

I wanted to do something extra special and when I saw this pinata at Walmart, I thought it would be the perfect addition to put this project “over the top”!  Filled with Mars candy – Snickers, M&Ms, Peanut M&Ms, and Twix – it’s going to give some kids a smile this Halloween.  Gotta say it again, “YES!”

Happy Halloween!

Time to take it to The Caring Place.  Keeping the ghost safe, of course!

Car seats come in handy!

I can’t show pictures of the children because of confidentiality issues, but here are some smiles from me the staff at The Caring Place!
