My daughter absolutely adores this movie, Against the Wild!  We have watched it at least three times and she is naming every new stuffed animal, “Chinook” after the dog in the movie.

About the Movie

Families from coast-to-coast will come along on a breathtaking and uplifting wilderness adventure with Anchor Bay Entertainment’s Against the Wild, available on DVD and digital download. The action-packed feature film tells the dramatic tale of two siblings and their Alaskan Malamute, who must make an emergency landing when their small plane has engine problems. They find themselves in a beautiful but potentially dangerous natural environment that they must overcome together.

Against the Wild is written and directed by Richard Boddington, starring CJ Adams (The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Dan in Real Life), Erin Pitt (Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and the upcoming American Girl: Isabelle Dances into the Spotlight) and Natasha Henstridge (She Spies, The Whole Nine Yards) and co-starring John Tench (Tooth Fairy), the film made its national retail and digital debut on March 11, 2014.

Against the Wild begins with siblings Zach (Adams) and Hannah (Pitt) traveling by seaplane with Chinook, their Alaskan Malamute, to visit their father (Ted Whittall of “Beauty & The Beast”) for the weekend. When their plane encounters engine trouble, the pilot is forced to make an emergency landing in the woods in the middle of nowhere. As they travel on foot to seek help, Zach, Hannah and their loyal companion come face-to-face with the challenges of the wilds – from wolves and grizzly bears to forest fires. Using all the wilderness skills they know – and with some help from Chinook, the siblings must work together to overcome each obstacle and conquer the ultimate goal – returning home again.

Against the Wild has been approved for all ages by the Dove Foundation, which awarded the film with 5/5 Doves, and recommends it as “a terrific film for the entire family!”

Our Take

As I said in the beginning, Against the Wild is one of my daughter’s new favorite movies.  The kids in the movie, and especially the dog, Chinook resonated with her and she can watch it again and again.  While adults may find some challenging “survival facts”, we used it as a learning opportunity to teach her outdoor skills about what is real and what is not, what to-do and what not-to-do.  But as family films go, this is an entertaining one for adults and children.  If you have a child who loves pets and/or the outdoors, I recommend this film, I think everyone will enjoy it.
