We had a family movie night and even included Grandma and Grandpa for this one!  The three of us had seen The Mighty Macs when it was first released, but now we had the DVD so we watched it again and added Grandma and Grandpa to the group.

It’s so fun to have a movie night when you can cheer on the underdog together and talk about the value of teamwork.  In a family setting, I love being able to tell my daughter how we are a team and the whole family works together to make the whole more valuable than the individuals combined.  There are some great messages in the movie The Mighty Macs about teamwork.  From a simple illustration of telling a teammate when her lipstick looks bad (you won’t find that in movies like Hoosiers and Rudy!), to helping a teammate feel like she belongs in a group picture.  Even though it is about a women’s sports team, my husband and father were routing along with us girls and enjoyed this movie just as much!

Sorry, I’m jumping ahead, let me tell you what it’s about.  The Mighty Macs tells the story of the first women’s basketball team to win a national tournament in 1972.  Immaculata College was a small, all-women’s Catholic school just outside of Philadelphia.  When the season started, the team didn’t even have a gymnasium to practice in!  They had a coach and that’s about it.  But it turned out having that coach and that team was all it took to be champions.

Check out the uniforms, the coach's outfit and the "booster club" - this movie will make you smile and cheer!

One of the fun facts I learned watching the DVD that I didn’t realize watching the film is that the original team and coach have cameo roles in the movie.  You have to watch for the scene when the coach passes a note down a row of nuns sitting in church.  The “nuns” are actually the real life players from that first championship team!  Coach Cathy Rush, the real Cathy, appears in a bank scene as a teller.

I highly recommend The Mighty Macs for a family movie night – I hope you love it as much as we did!
