Have you ever purchased something and wondered who made it?
Have you ever worn a “statement” piece of jewelry and had a story to tell about it?
I own this beautiful necklace, that a friend of mine called “stunning” just in the last few weeks.
I bought it from Novica.com and because I did, I can tell a story about it. Â It has a Quetzal bird in silver surrounding the jade and is made by an artist in Guatemala. Â My daughter Rosie was born in Guatemala, so it has special meaning for me in addition to being a gorgeous piece of jewelry.
Novica.com has found artisans from around the world and given them a platform to sell their creations to customers around the world.  More than 2,000 artisans!  Founded twelve years ago, Novica.com is an online, fair-trade marketplace with more than 30,000 offerings.  From jewelry to apparel, or home goods, Novica has unusual, limited edition items. Â
Novica is celebrating a renovation of their website. Â It’s super easy to navigate – you can filter by region of the world or type of item you are looking for. Â There are gift suggestions and all kinds of help to find something unique and fun within your price range. Â I think you’ll find the photography of items quite beautiful. Â I could spend hours reading the stories and shopping the beautiful things. Â Join me and I hope you can find something that you like.
Here are some of my favorites:
Colder weather is coming to Chicago and I love wearing scarves in the winter.  This is beautiful, isn’t it?  It was made on a back strap loom – one of the simplest and earliest means of weaving – by a woman who is part of the association called K’amolon K’i K’ojonel in Guatemala.  When you purchase an item like this, you are not only adding a beautiful hand-made piece to your wardrobe, you are supporting someone who needs your help to sustain themselves, their art and their customs.  I found this when I started in the section called, Unique Gifts.
Speaking of gifts, when you give someone a special gift, isn’t if fun to be able to tell them a story? Â Art glass is one of my favorites and I think everyone loves. Â The piece above is from Brazil. Â The artist says, “Round about 2000, I crafted my first fused glass fruit bowl and I became enchanted with it. I resolved to learn more about this craft and I bought a kiln and the necessary tools. I was completely dedicated to the learning of this craft, all on my own. The most fascinating moment in the crafting of glass pieces is when you open the kiln’s door. There’s nothing like predicting the patterns and hues the paint will take – the end result is magnificent! Â One of my dreams has been to present this kind of work to the world, and the Internet offers me that possibility.” Â I found this when I started in the section called, Unique Home Decor.
Elephants are a powerful symbol in many cultures. Â I was searching in Gifts for Mom and found this unusual necklace. Â The mother and baby make it a perfect “mother’s necklace”. Â The backstory is interesting as well – made in Thailand by a woman named Jantana who is continuing her family’s tradition of jewelry design. Â The piece is appropriately named, “Family Love”.

I like the May’s Lily of the Valley Hand Crafted Sterling Silver and Emerald Pendant – there were always lily of the valley flowers around my grandma’s house when I was a little girl. Grandma passed when I was 8 (over 30 years ago), and lilies of the valley still remind me of her every time I see them.
