The average disposable lunch costs $4.02/day.
The average waste-free lunch costs $2.65/day.
That’s a difference of $246 for the school year.
If you have 3 children, the difference is $738.00!! Â
The environmental impact is just as startling. Â The trash added to a landfill by one child’s lunches is 67 lbs per year. Â There are 511 children at my daughter’s school – that’s 34,237 lbs of trash per year!!
A reusable lunch kit is easy-to-use, convenient, saves time, saves money, and puts less trash into landfills. Â I’d say that’s a Back-To-School ESSENTIAL, wouldn’t you?
So where do you start to make your kids a reusable lunch kit? Â The goal is no waste, so you need washable containers and a reusable bag. Â Don’t forget the washable utensils and a cloth napkin. Â Voila!
When you are looking for washable containers, you need something durable with size flexibility to fit sandwiches, leftovers, salads, etc. Â My favorite mantra for healthy eating is to “lunch on a rainbow”. Â I try to give my daughter healthy, colorful choices that make her lunch delicious and fun. Â Like any kids, she loves finger food that’s easy to eat and choices. Â So I want containers that let me give her the variety she loves.
I found a product that fits all those criteria! Â The reliable quality of Rubbermaid is evident in the LunchBlox Kit – a set of containers that work together to serve up a delicious, fresh lunch. Â No more squished sandwiches, messy leaks, or warm-supposed-to-be-cold food!
The Rubbermaid LunchBlox Kit features that I love:
- individual containers snap together in any configuration to fit neatly and easily into any lunch bag
- the blue block fits easy-peasey into the freezer (even if it’s jam-packed like ours) and is a no-mess solution to keep food cold
- handy measurements on the pieces work for portion control
- dishwasher safe (oh, yeah!)
- leak-proof containers survive the most active kid in your family
- three sizes to fit whatever kind of treats you make
- BPA-free
Tips to make lunch preparation easy
Are your kids old enough to pitch in and pack their own lunches? Â They will be more likely to love the food, if they’ve packed it themselves! Â And it will make your life easier if you are just supervising and adding final touches.
Pack lunch as you clean up the dinner dishes. Â Incorporate leftovers in tomorrow’s lunch. Â Have your Rubbermaid LunchBlox Kit handy and fill the containers with treats from dinner! Â Quick and easy.

I recently bought two of the smaller blocks and I love that they snap together. I’ve used them in my kids’ lunch so far with watermelon, cantaloupe, pasta salad and salsa and they haven’t leaked either, which is nice.
