Home RunThe book, “Home Run” is a novelization of the original movie, which will be released theaters April 19th.  After reading the book, I can’t wait to see the movie.  It’s the story of a major league baseball player who has been running away from something his entire life, but it is catching up with him and he can no longer ignore his demons.

Cory Brand is a charismatic, likeable young man who has a big talent.  He began playing baseball to save his own life – literally.  His abusive, alcoholic father tortures him by scaring him with fast pitches.  Cory’s only defense is to learn to hit them.  He grows up in fear, but bravely protecting his younger brother.  Fast forward and Cory is now playing in the big leagues but his anger issues are growing out of control.  Finally, an incident forces him to enter an addiction recovery program – in his hometown.  When he sees, one day, that he has become the monster that his father was, he knows that he truly must ask for help.

I loved this book – it was difficult to put down!  The main character is very likeable and I found myself rooting for him to get his life together and overcome his childhood.  Some of the scenes with his father were difficult to read, not because they were graphic, but because author, Travis Thrasher, did such an excellent job of portraying the child’s emotion.  He also gives deep insight into the trials of the older Cory Brand as he struggles with recovery.

There is no Rafflecopter form. I like books about sports and watched a PBS 2 part special about abuse called Kind Hearted Woman which finished yesterday.
