Giveaway: California Wine Club – What Makes A Wine Club Different? Myth or Reality? (US – Ends 3/31)

Myth:  Wine Clubs are only for wine aficionados.

Reality:  Wine clubs are for anyone who appreciates good food, good wine, and good company.  I know only a little about wine – enough to know that I don’t know much!  I do not have a “trained palette”.  But I do want to serve a good wine when we have a nice dinner or friends over.  And exactly because I don’t know enough, I like to rely on the wine club to choose a wine for me.

Myth:  Wine Clubs are only for people who drink a lot of wine.  When you join, you have to commit to buying months of deliveries.

Reality:  The California Wine Club deliveries can be tailored to your needs.  You can get wine delivered in whatever quantity you choose and whenever you choose to have it delivered.  The plan I tried was two bottles, one white and one red, each month.  That is not a lot of wine!  Especially if you have company, that is only two meals.  And there are no membership fees at California Wine Club, you can cancel at any time.  Also, if you can choose to receive one white & one red, two reds, or two whites.  And change that selection at any time.

Myth:  Wine Clubs are expensive, fancy wines.

Reality:  While wine clubs can provide rare, unusual, expensive wines, they can also help you find the perfect mid-price wine to serve.  The wines I received had a suggested retail price of about $25 a bottle.  Not even in the ballpark of hundreds of dollars.  But because you have Bruce and Pam of California Wine Clubs choosing the wine for you, you can be assured that it will be delicious.  Deliveries of Premier Club wines (2 bottles) are $49.95 (including shipping!).

Myth:  You have to know a lot about wine to be in a wine club.

Reality:  The description that is provided with a wine club wine gives me the interesting information to appreciate and tell my friends more about what we are consuming.  For example, the last bottle I had was a Three Saints Chardonnay.  Because of the information in the California Wine Club newsletter, that came with the wine, I knew that this chardonnay offered flavors of orange, honey and allspice, with a burst of citrus.  By just tasting the wine, I would not know that.  My sense of taste is not developed to know that.  But after reading it, and tasting the wine, I can identify some of those flavors.  It increases my enjoyment of the wine.

Myth:  The wine club wines are no different than what I see in the store, why ship it from far away.

Reality:  Many of the wines you see in the store are actually “bulk wine” that is repackaged, blended, and labeled to make you think it came directly from a winery.  When you buy a wine from California Wine Club, it comes from a real, working winery.  Bruce and Pam have visited and evaluated the wine and winery.  They hand select each month’s offerings.  When you get a California Wine Club shipment, it even comes with a map – you know exactly where your wine is from.

Myth:  French or foreign wines are better and more sophisticated than American wines.

Reality:  As much as I love all things French, I feel good supporting American businesses, and American farmers.  “While America’s small family farms are a rarity in places like Kansas and Iowa, they are burgeoning small busineses in California wine country.  Uncork a bottle of California wine and give a boost to America’s small farmers.” from Volume 23 of Uncorked.

Whether it’s for yourself, or you are searching for the perfect gift California Wine Club is an excellent choice.

We proudly served a California Wine Club selection at our Oscars Party.

I sent two of my cousins, one in Minnesota and one in California, Wine Club selections at Christmas.  It was easy, reasonably priced, and a gift I knew they would enjoy.  I can even speak to the customer service at California Wine Club because on one of the orders I made a mistake on the internet order and called the 800 number to correct it.  The woman I spoke to was very friendly, helpful and correct my order right away.  It wasn’t that easy to explain what I’d done wrong but she  understood and fixed it immediately.

Oops, I almost forgot to mention that right now California Wine Club is having a Spring Sale!  Up to 71% off their award-winning limited-production wines.  Check it out on their website, or give one of their friendly operators a call at 1.800.777.4443.  But hurry, the sale ends March 31, 2012.
