April 15th is quickly approaching!  *shudder*  It is my LEAST favorite time of year.  Last year, we filed for an extension but this year we are bound and determined to file on time.  Now, if I can just get going on gathering all my paperwork…

Are you looking for some help, too?  A tax guide might be what you need.  “J.K. Lasser Institute has been the premier publisher of consumer tax guides since 1939, when Jacob Kay Lasser first published Your Income Tax. Since then, the guide has been published continuously for over seventy years and read by over 39,000,000 people.”  Wow, that sounds like an authority to me!

“J.K. Lasser Institute spokespeople are regularly sought after as media tax experts. They regularly appear on such broadcast programs as CNBC, CNN, and Bloomberg TV. They are also often featured in numerous periodicals, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Self Magazine, The New York Times, Newsweek and Reader’s Digest.”

The book starts out with a quick section on “What’s New for 2012” highlighting changes.  A big one that almost everyone needs is the IRS mileage allowance and there it is – right in the beginning!  I’m liking this book… well, as much as I can like a book about tax.  Then there’s a reference page with “Key Tax Numbers” that are handy when you need to know the limits, standard deductions, or exemptions.  I skipped the “Looking Ahead to 2013” – I can’t even think about that yet!

Part 1 is the Filing Basics, beginning with everyone’s basic question, “Do I have to file a 2012 Tax Return?”  If you’re lucky, the answer is “no”.  Whew, dodge that bullet!  Alas, I do not fall in that category and have to keep reading.  Then the basic question, “Where to file?”  “Filing Deadlines” so you know when to file and “Choosing Which Tax Form to File”.

Unfortunate, but necessary, after Part 1 it gets a bit more complicated.  Thankfully, there is a large, detailed index in the back which means I can look up what I need to know and not have to read the whole book.
