I’m thrilled to be kicking off the blog tour of the book, My Loving Vigil Keeping by Carla Kelly.  I just finished reading the book and loved it.  There are so many elements that are likely to touch an emotional chord.  Whether you’ve lost a parent, whether you’ve ever felt out-of-place or perhaps if you have found a moment of bravery and struck out on an adventure, this book will speak to you.

The main character, Della, is a striking beauty, but because she was raised by relatives who looked down on her, she is uncertain of her beauty and her strength.  But somehow she is inspired to take a job that no one else wants, in a place far away from the only home she knows.  It’s a teaching job in a mining camp and her father was a miner.

“But there it was, a coal mining camp.  Papa had been a hard rock miner.  Coal wasn’t as glamorous, but it would do.”

The chapter describing her arrival to the mining camp is one of my favorites.  Author, Carla Kelly, had me laughing out loud as I pictured the strange sights she saw and transportation she had to use!  The miners are serious about the education of their children, however, and welcome the teacher that will give them the tools they need to succeed in the world.  “‘Our teacher’?  Looks like the miners are already taking care of you,” Israel said with a grin.  All are not welcoming however.  When Della meets her principal, she doesn’t find a friendly face.  In fact, I was laughing out loud again at the trouble Della’s principal has with her unruly, curly hair.  My daughter has curly hair and I could relate a little too much!

When I was young, I read the classic “Christy”.  It’s always been a romantic notion for me of a young woman striking bravely out to help communities sorely in need of good teachers.

The end of the book is quite dramatic and will have you rapidly turning pages holding your breath to see what happens!

About the Author

carla-kelly

From www.CarlaKelly.com:  “Award-winning author Carla Kelly is a veteran of the New York and international publishing world. The author of more than thirty novels and novellas for Donald I. Fine Co., Signet, and Harlequin, Carla is the recipient of two Rita Awards (think Oscars for romance writing) from Romance Writers of America and two Spur Awards (think Oscars for western fiction) from Western Writers of America.
Recently, she’s been writing Regency romances (think Pride and Prejudice) set in the Royal Navy’s Channel Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars between England and France. She comes by her love of the ocean from her childhood as a Navy brat.
Carla’s history background makes her no stranger to footnote work, either. During her National Park Service days at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, Carla edited Friedrich Kurz’s fur trade journal. She recently completed a short history of Fort Buford, where Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881.
Following the “dumb luck” principle that has guided their lives, the Kellys recently moved to Wellington, Utah, from North Dakota and couldn’t be happier in their new location. In her spare time, Carla volunteers at the Railroad and Mining Museum in Helper, Utah. She likes to visit her five children, who live here and there around the United States. Her favorite place in Utah is Manti, located after a drive on the scenic byway through Huntington Canyon.
And why is she so happy these days? Carla is enjoying writing for an LDS audience now, where she feels most at home.”
