Did you know that 86% of US households own an outdoor barbecue, grill or smoker!  Wow!  My husband, Sean, cooks on our grill almost year round.  He loves to make hot dogs, grilled chicken, and occasionally we splurge on steak.  I would definitely classify him as a true grillmaster.  He enjoys cooking the protein but also ventures into veggies and side dishes.  He makes a delicious potato and onion side dish, mmmm.  Stay tuned, my next post announcing the giveaway winner will also have his recipe!  When I asked my husband to share his tips about grilling, these were his favorites:

Tip #1  Pre-heat the grill.

Don’t just turn on the grill and slap down the food.  It only takes a few minutes on a gas grill or a bit longer for charcoal, but you get a much better “sear” when you pre-heat the grill.  (And a cool “sizzle”!)   Take your meat out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter top long enough to come to room temperature.  This will also help to cook the meat evenly.  Did you know searing meat caramelizes the sugars and browns the proteins present in meat, resulting in more appealing color and flavor?

Tip #2 Don’t fuss with the food

It sounds counter-intuitive, but the less you do, the better the food will taste.  Avoid turning the meat too often, moving it around on the grill, picking it up to peek.  Put it down solidly on the hot grill and then leave it for approximately two minutes.  This will sear in the juices and keep your meat moist.  After the two minutes, turn it once to sear the other side.  After the second two minutes, turn down the heat, close the cover and let the meat cook through.  Don’t pick it up, move it around, flip it over and over.  Let it cook!

Tip #3 Use tongs, never a fork

Because the searing seals in the juices, use tongs to turn the meat rather than a fork, or anything that will pierce the meat and let the moisture escape.  Using tongs or flippers will give you a tender, moist main dish.

Pre-heat your grill for maximum searing.

Sears has a great selection of grills and grill accessories.  How about surprising Dad with a new grill this year!  Or a gift card for him to go pick out his own.  There are some deals too – like you can receive a $20 gift card with the purchase of a Hamilton Beach 3 burner gas grill at Sears now thru 6/10 http://bit.ly/SearHotDeal6.
