What series of books is incredibly smart, yet their name contains the word “Dummies”?  I have a huge appreciation for the “For Dummies” series of books.  They find the best people in a field to write an easy-to-read, fascinating book about subjects we want to know about.  Soccer for Dummies is no exception.  Written by Soccer Blogger, Tom Dunmore and Soccer Writer, Scott Murray, this book has valuable information for:

  • soccer players
  • coaches
  • fans

Tom Dunmore is the author of Historical Dictionary of Soccer, and the editor of several soccer websites and blogs including XI Quarterly. He is an avid Chicago Fire fan. Scott Murray is a soccer writer for The Guardian and FourFourTwo.

Whether you’re a parent or a youth league player, this book can help you understand the rules and help you improve your skills on the field.  Even if you are a television fan that will never kick a ball in a game, this book will help you increase your enjoyment and knowledge of the history of the game.

Q:  If a tie game goes to Penalty Shootouts, how many penalty kicks does each team get?

a.  One     b.  Two     c.  Five     d.  Three

Looking through the Table of Contents of any “For Dummies” book has me turning the pages as quickly as I can.  With topics like these:

  • Playing the Game – Playing Solo and Playing with Others
  • Getting Your Game On:  The Gear You Need
  • Laying Down the Laws
  • Players, Positions, and Tactics
  • Honing Your Skills
  • Coaching for Success
  • The World Cup
  • Looking at the Game All Over the World (and lists 11 countries)
  • Playing Together:  Clubs and Leagues Around the World
  • Famous Clubs
  • Women’s Soccer
  • The Fan’s Enclosure:  Following the Game
  • Soccer on Screen
  • Ten Great Players; Teams; Great Games

Those are just some of the chapter titles that grabbed my interest. And you know if it’s a “For Dummies” book, it’s going to be entertaining and easy-to-read, with helpful icons highlighting tips, things to remember, warnings, and facts.

Here’s an example of a thing to “remember”:

“While you’re practicing this drill (dribbling), try to keep your head up.  Don’t look down at your feet and/or the ball if you can help it.  When you dribble in a real game you need to keep your head up to look around the field for team mates to pass to, as well as keep an eye out for opposing defenders.”
