The ESV Journaling Bible is such a pretty Bible! The first thing I noticed was the size. It is not as long as most Bibles and fits very nicely in your hand. The cover is fabric and reminds me of a design you might doodle on a pad. The color is a dark blue that reminded me of denim. What makes it a “journaling” Bible? Well, it has wide margins on the side of each page that are perfect for writing observations, thoughts, notes and anything you might want to use to record your feelings about a passage.
One feature of this ESV Journaling Bible that I especially appreciated was a section in the front entitled, “What the Bible Says About….”. It contains different subjects and then lists places in the bible you can find quotations about that subject. For example, a subject is “Courage” and it says Joshua 1:9. If I go to Joshua, I find the passage, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Or “Forgiving Others” Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” I am not the best at remembering Bible passages, so I liked being able to find them by subject. Another feature that I found helpful was the One-Year Bible Reading Plan. At the end of the Bible there is a calendar with suggested readings for each day of the year. The packaging of this particular Bible is very attractive, it would make a beautiful gift or a lasting keepsake.
There are also these features:
- Introductions to each book of the Bible
- Section headings
- Textual footnotes
- Cross-reference footnotes
- Black letter text on cream-colored paper
