Goodbye Old Cell Phone Carrier… Hello, Better!

How much time do you spend on your cell phone?  More than you spend talking to your husband?  I’m probably in a tie, on that one.  Is it a good relationship (with your cell phone carrier, not your husband!)?  Maybe it’s time to start shopping around and say hello to better.

Every weekday morning when my husband drives my daughter to school, she calls me and we talk on the phone.  I know, I know, it’s silly, she just kissed me goodbye and then she dials the phone so we can talk.  But hey, that’s what we do.  On the three mile ride to school, she can’t hear me for about a minute.  Sounds trivial, and it is.  But it’s also annoying.  She says, “Mommy?  Mommy?!  Mommy?!!” (increasing in volume with each word) until it’s a panicked “MOMMY!!!”  My husband says, “It’s okay, you just can’t hear her, remember?  She’s still there. ”  And my daughter says, “I know but, MOMMY!!!”  Every morning.  *Sigh*

I’m not alone.  In a recent survey, 56 percent of the respondents admitted to being unhappy with their carrier over the past year but only 35 percent of all respondents have ever broken up with their provider.  That’s me!  Not happy, but not ready to break up – maybe.

But what is the best way to shop for a new carrier?  I tried asking my friends, not too much help.  I’m thinking that 56 percent number might be low, because way more than half of my friends are unhappy with their carrier.  And the ones that I count as “happy” say, “I guess it’s okay….” in a very non-committal voice.

Next I checked Consumer Reports.  Yikes!  My current carrier got horrible ratings.  The company with the best ratings?  US Cellular!  So when I was asked to write a post for US Cellular, I said, “I’d love to!”  If Consumer Reports ranks it that good, I’m happy to tell my readers about it.  US Cellular is not my current carrier…yet.  I am definitely going to find out when our contract is up and think this over!

Why don’t people switch when they are unhappy?  People are hesitant to call it quits. More than one-third of people in a survey say they stick with their current provider because they believe all carriers are the same, it is too much trouble to switch carriers, or they don’t want to sign a new contract.  But if the service is that much better?  If all carriers aren’t the same (and according to Consumer Reports, they definitely are NOT the same)…. this bears looking into!  I remember when I switched to this carrier, it wasn’t that much trouble.  And I got to keep the same number….  I deserve better!

I’ve been reading about the US Cellular “Hello Better” campaign.

Here are some of the key points:

  • In addition to passionate associates, U.S. Cellular provides customers with unique benefits such as the industry’s only points-based rewards program, no contract after the first contract ends, free incoming calls and texts, free Overage Protection and free Battery Swap for your device.
  • U.S. Cellular believes that people deserve better. A mobile phone is supposed to make life simpler and easier to get things done. Your relationship with your wireless carrier should be the same. US Cellular treats their customers like neighbors, not numbers.
