This past weekend, I volunteered at the 2014 Chicago Marathon. Â It was the first time I’d been to the marathon and it was more exciting than I had imagined. Â Before I went I read that there would be over 40,000 participants and over 10,000 volunteers but it really didn’t register for me what that meant in terms of crowds. Â Wow. Â I was assigned to water stop #3 at the 5 mile mark to hand out water to the runners. Â I was amazed and so impressed with how organized the entire event was. Â There was a steady stream of runners – filling the street for over three hours. Â Everyone (runners, spectators, and volunteers) were friendly and celebrating.
Handing out water was a surprising challenge and a ton of fun.  Because the weather was a little chilly and it is the “Windy City” after all, I’d worn my waterproof, windproof pants and wow, was I glad.  When runners are speeding by and grabbing on-the-go, there is a lot of spilling!  The three hours went by so quickly, I was surprised when the last runners passed.  I would definitely do it again, and it was a great experience.
