The first post on Kelly’s Lucky You, starts like this:

“What I learned at this conference inspired me to start a new blog. It’s fitting that my first post should be about the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.” First post of Kelly’s Lucky You, 2/15/2010

When I attended the first Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, I came home passionate about blogging and ready to take on the challenge of creating a new blog.  Kelly’s Lucky You was born.  It was a life-changing experience for me.  Blogging has opened many doors and given me opportunities to do things I could never have done otherwise.  My life would be very different today had I not attended, and I will be forever grateful.

Disney Social Media Moms Invitation

Coming home from the 2013 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, I am once again passionate about a new pursuit.  Before I tell you what it is, I have to share that I have a DWTMA gene.  I “Don’t-Want-To-Miss-Anything”.  I love new experiences.  I want to try anything and everything, and if there is an invitation I’m the first to say, “I’ll be there”.  My mom always told me that you can find interesting things everywhere – if you look hard enough.  She gave me a love of reading which opened doors to discovery.  Both my parents loved to travel and encouraged me to travel whenever and wherever I could.  They took my natural curiosity and nurtured it until it bloomed into DWTMA.

About a month before the conference, Disney sent me an email saying, “Our good friends at runDisney are hosting a Fun Run this year.  It’s the first time in the history of the conference we’ve had a Fun Run, and we’d love conference attendees to participate.  This will be a 2-Mile Fun Run at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, so you’ll get a chance to see this incredible facility where thousands of youth, amateur and professional athletes compete each year.

Did I hear “First time”?  “Fun”?  “Chance to see”?  “Incredible?” I’m in!  But wait, I’m overweight, out-of-shape, never been able to run a block.  As an ex-smoker, I get out of breath when I watch other people run.  You know that saying, “If you see me running, you know someone must be chasing me.”  And it says further in the email, “You must be able to maintain a 13-minute mile.  This is very important for this Fun Run for the safety of all runners.”  I don’t know how fast a 13-minute mile is but I’m pretty sure the only way I could do that, is if I drive.

But, it’s a chance to run at Disney World.  A chance to run at Disney World.  You don’t have that opportunity every day.

Add in this, “We’ll be joined by a very special guest – noted author, speaker and season 5 champion of the popular reality show “The Biggest Loser” – Ali Vincent.”  Yikes, throw in a celebrity.  I’m salivating, I want to do this so bad.  But I can’t run.  I literally tried to run across the street the other day and my mind said, “run” but my body didn’t move.  Did not move.  I had heard about C25K – couch to five K – but the very first workout is jog for 1 minute and and walk for 1.5 minutes, 8 times.  I couldn’t jog for 1 minute – once!  I was much more “couch” than their “couch”.  I am “recliner-couch” all the way.

As fate would have it, one of the parents at my daughter’s school had posted that he would be coaching a beginning running program.  It said that it was for anyone and everyone.  The help I needed.  I heard my mother’s voice saying, “What do you have to lose?  Try it!”  And try it, I did.  The first night of the training, I told the coach that I had a chance to run at Disney World, but in order to do it, I had to be able to run a 13 minute mile.  Did he think I could?  He lied (at least I think he did!) and said, “Absolutely!”.  I saw hope and started.

What do you think happened?

Yup, here’s the proof.

I’m in the middle, just above Ali Vincent.

That was two weeks ago and I’m still attending the training.  The end of the sessions is June 22nd, when we run a 5K.  I’m still huffing and puffing, I say, “Just call me wheezy”.  But I’m still going!

The shirt for my training program says, “Running Changes Everything”.  And I’ve found that to be true.  I’ve noticed that I’m losing weight, feeling stronger, eating healthier, feeling happier.  I don’t feel confident yet to say, “I’m a runner” but I am closer than I was a month ago, and do feel confident that the day will come.

Once again, I have to say, “Disney Changes Everything”.

And thank you!

Stay tuned for more about the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and more about the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.  I have tons to share about the inspiring speakers, the fun parties, the magical look of happiness on my daughter’s face that I only see at Disney World.  But the Fun Run was my remember-forever moment from the conference.  It’s the moment that will be tucked away in my heart.  Dreams do come true at Disney World.

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I paid a fee to attend the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.  The retail value of the amenities exceeded the amount of the conference fee.  Disney has not required me to blog about the event, but I love sharing Disney experiences and information with my readers.  If you want to read more about Disney, please click on the Disney category tab in my blog header.
