My daughter just turned seven and we are starting to negotiate the tricky area of technology access.  So many questions!

  • At what age do you allow your kids to have their own email?
  • At what age do you give your child a phone?
  • At what age do you let them have a Facebook or twitter account?
I’m starting with the email right now and I’m trying a service called, Safe Email for Kids.  It’s easy to sign up for their free trial – you don’t have to give payment info and won’t be automatically signed up if you don’t cancel (don’t you hate those?).  You fill out a very simple form with your name, email address, city and state.  The 30 day is available to everyone, but I can also give you a promo code to extend that to 60 days.  Use promo code: US Family when registering.

Kids Email will send you an email to confirm your account.  Once you do that, you can add children.

Some of the security options available (you choose which to activate) are:

  • Do you want your child to receive email only from those listed on his/her contact list?  If an email is sent from someone not on the contact list to your child, they will go into a queue waiting for your approval.  You can notify the sender that they have been placed in the queue.
  • Do you want a copy of all your child’s emails sent to your own email address?
  • Do you want to remove images and links from all emails sent to your child?
  • Do you want to filter out bad words?
  • and more!

Just background, my daughter doesn’t have a phone, but we did get her an iPad Mini for her birthday in November.  By the way, I just went through the decision process of iPad vs iPad Mini vs iPod Touch.  If you’re interested in the path we took, let me know in the comments and I’ll write a post!

I just set up my daughter’s KidsEmail.org account today.  Because she is so young and this is her first account, I made the security pretty tight.  I’ll update you and let you know how it works for us after we’ve tried it for a few weeks.  If you sign up, please let me know what you think of it and if you have any advice for us!
