I helped out at a Twitter party for Kids LiveWell recently and in preparation learned about the program to improve making healthy choices when eating out.  When Mom Central asked me to post about the program, as well, I was excited to share this information with you.  I’m being compensated with gift certificate to one of the participating restaurants, which is like frosting on the cake, scratch that, it’s like grilled tomatoes in my grilled vegetables!    Disclosure of Material Connection:  I wrote this post while participating in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of the National Restaurant Association.  I will receive a gift code to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Like most busy (ie tired) families, we eat out often.  Not only for special occasions but for days when we are in a hurry, too tired to cook, or I don’t want to mess up my occasionally clean kitchen *guilty*.  It’s often enough that it can’t be considered an “occasional splurge” and I have to be concerned about eating healthy.

Restaurants that participate in the voluntary Kids LiveWell program commit to offering healthful meal items for children, with a particular focus on increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and limiting unhealthy fats, sugars and sodium.  Participating restaurants get third-party verification and promotional materials for qualified meals and individual menu items.

Guess how many restaurants are participating?  Sitting down?  Over 30,000 and growing!  There’s an app that can help you find a participating restaurant near you.  On my iPhone I went to App Store and searched for Kids LiveWell then touched “Install App”.  Once installed, I touch “Restaurants” for an alphabetical list of participating restaurants.

You can touch the restaurant you’re interested in and you’ll get an option for Menu Choices and go on for more info from there!

Or if you touch “Locator”, you’ll be given a map with the participating restaurants closest to your current location.  Explore the app for more!
