Make a difference in your community!

It only takes a click.

My parents volunteered for various organizations from their church to the scouts and encouraged me to do the same.  I started with nursing home visits and now, years later, I serve on the Boards of Directors of two non-profits in my community.  I remembering hearing once that if you are feeling badly or depressed, take the time to volunteer and help someone else.  It truly makes you feel good.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

One of the reasons that I’ve made it a priority to volunteer since I’ve become a mom is to provide an example for my daughter.  I hope that she will see it as a normal part of everyone’s lives.  I want her to feel aware of other’s needs, grateful for the blessing we have been provided, and know the satisfaction of helping someone else.  She has a big heart and really cares about others.  It’s making her a better person.

State Farm is encouraging all of us to get out there and help, by helping themselves.  Their new program is called State Farm Neightborhood Assist. 4,000 causes applied for this year’s State Farm Neighborhood Assist. Now the top 200 causes have been selected and they need your “assist” to help vote them into the top 40. From April 28 through May 16, anyone who has the free State Farm Neighborhood Assist Facebook application can vote daily for their favorite cause, or causes, and help bring $25,000 to the top 40 vote getters.

Take a look at this infographic for facts about the 2013 program.

I voted for the 365 Girl Foundation project in Illinois.  If they win they would use the 25k to continue to provide a positive, fun, and structured after school program with schools like (National Teacher’s Academy) which is located 2 miles from one of the cities most violent housing developments. The students at NTA who have completed the 365 Girl Foundation After School program have learned a love for Math and Science through 30 min weekly tutoring sessions, conflict resolution, social media etiquette, and positive self esteem.  There are so many dangerous activities for girls to find themselves in after school, but a program like this will not only keep them safe, but also encourage skills that will benefit them for their entire lives.
