Did you read the post, Signs That You Need A New Mattress, and recognize more than one? Maybe it’s time to go mattress shopping! Eek! Does that make you cringe? Suddenly you feel a need to mow the lawn, re-organize the linen closet, wash refrigerator shelves? Anything to avoid *shiver* mattress shopping?
Well, mattress shopping doesn’t have to be a stressful experience with these helpful tips:
1. Do your homework before you set foot in a store.
Mattress shopping is not something we do every day or even every year! Reduce your anxiety by doing a little online research before you leave home. Find out the different options and think about what is important to you. Before you get to the store, research brands and narrow down your choices to one or two. If you are in the store and looking at every brand and every option, you will get dizzy and want to run for the car!
Look for a respected name mattress. Mattress shopping is not the time to look for a bargain. You spend 1/3 of your life on a mattress and a good night’s sleep effects every moment of your life and health. Invest in a quality mattress from a company that you know has been making mattresses for years and will continue to make mattresses for years to come.
Sealy owns and operates 25 bedding plants in the U.S. For three decades, Sealy has been number one in market share and unwavering in its vision to help the world sleep better. And through its design, manufacturing and leadership, Sealy is poised to continue its legacy for years to come.
Read the information on the brands’ websites to determine what your options are for:
a. Type of Mattress
For example:Â Sealy makes three types of mattresses – Traditional Innerspring; Memory Foam; and Latex Foam
b. Support Level
Mattresses come in various degrees of firmness.
Firm: For customers who want a stiff surface support with just a hint of softness for comfort we offer firm top cushioning.
Plush: For customers who are looking for a soft, cushioning surface with deep support we offer plush comfort.
You won’t know which level you prefer until you try them in the store, but it helps to know ahead of time what you will be looking at and the terminology.
c. Comfort of the exterior fabric
An example of exterior fabric options –
2. Bring your pillow.
I know, it feels silly, but if you are going to test a mattress you need a pillow. Preferably, your pillow. It’s difficult enough to get a feel for a mattress when you are laying there, in the store, with a salesman staring at you, but it is impossible to do if you don’t have a pillow! (Put on a fresh pillow case before you leave home, hehehe)
3. Know the size bed you want before you leave home.
Here are the measurements of the average mattress sizes:
California King 72″ x 84″
King: 76″ x 80″
Queen: 60″ x 80″
Full: 53″ x 75″
Twin: 38″ x 75″
If you are replacing an existing mattress, measure your old one, just to make sure it’s the size you think it is! Delivery of a new mattress is not the time to find out you had a Queen, not a Full! If you are going to change sizes, measure your room and make sure the new size is going to be appropriate for the size of your room. When you get to the store, the mattresses will be in a large room and look smaller than when you get them home. Decide before you leave, what size you want to get.

Exactly! You’re right! Even though it’s so important – makes such a difference in how we feel every day – we still wait and feel guilty about spending that much money.
