Mattress Shopping? Five Things to Look for When Choosing a Brand

In my last post, “Don’t Leave Home Without Reading These Tips”, I passed on a tip to choose a brand, or at least narrow down your choices, before you leave home to shop for a mattress.  It can be overwhelming to look at every option in the mattress store.  And this is one purchase where you don’t want to skimp on quality.  Here are some things to consider when looking for a brand of mattresses:

1.  Trusted brand that owns and operates it’s own bedding plants

Look for a brand that has a history of making reliable, quality mattresses.  My choice is Sealy – the Sealy mattress business began in 1881 and in 1920, they already had 23 mattress plants.  I wanted to look for a company that manufactures it’s products and wasn’t just a re-seller.  This company knows mattresses and good night’s sleep!  For three decades, Sealy has been number one in market share.

2.  Leader in the Science of Sleep

The goal of a buying a new mattress is to get a better night’s sleep.  The health benefits of a good night’s sleep are far-reaching.  Not only does your physical health improve but also your mental health and quality of life.  A company like Sealy, maker of Sealy Posturepedic mattresses, has formed the Orthopedic Advisory Board (OAB) – a group of the finest doctors, clinicians and orthopedic surgeons who play a critical role in the design process. The doctors apply the extensive expertise they’ve gained while helping their patients sleep better to the design of Sealy Posturepedic mattresses to help the rest of the world sleep better.

3.  An environmentally responsible company

Sealy is proud to manufacture quality mattresses while pursuing practices that reduce their impact on the environment.  100% of the the steel used in Sealy mattresses comes from recycled steel.  Sealy’s foam supplier recycles 100% of its polyurethane scrap for use in the production of other consumer products (e.g., carpet, padding).  100% of manufacturing scrap from all Sealy’s plants is taken by a third-party company to be recycled for other products. Scrap includes textiles, foams and plastics.

4.  Fire-retardant, chemical-free materials

Sealy chose to use only environmentally friendly fire-retardant materials to meet the new U.S. Code of Federal Standards, Title 16, Part 1633, Standard for the Flammability (Open Flame) on Mattress Sets. By design, Sealy’s fire retardant materials have inherent re-retardant properties. As a result, no chemicals, including halogens or harsh metals, are used in Sealy’s fire-retardant materials.

5.  Available at reliable, accessible retailers

I’ve learned lessons about buying major purchases at stores that have great customer service and are backed by a large organization that will be around for years.  Sealy mattresses are sold at stores like Sears, Macy’s, Ashley Furniture, and Bloomingdale’s.  Those are some names I like to hear!

Next step?  Off to the store!
