I hadn’t read any of the Beverly Cleary’s books about Ramona and Beezus before I saw the movie, but now I want to find them for Rosie!  If you’re a fan, the Quimby family on Klickitat Street are old friends.

There is so much  humor and joie de vivre in the character of Ramona, played by Joey King.  It is something that makes Ramona “different”, which isn’t always easy for a third grader.  Ramona’s sister, Beatrice, nicknamed “Beezus” by a baby Ramona is going through teenage angst of her own. Beezus is played by Selena Gomez of Wizards of Waverly Place.  She does a very good job, convincing us of the alternating love and frustration of a typical sister.  Add the struggle of the parents when Dad loses his job, and you’ve got an array of challenges for Ramona to work on.

John Corbett is perfect as the Dad.  He’s everything you would want your Dad to be – loving, handsome, patient, and reliable. Bridget Moynahan plays the warm and funny Mom.  Sandra Oh (I love her!) turns in an excellent performance as Ramona’s beleaguered teacher.  The neighbors are quirky (aren’t everyone’s neighbors quirky?).  The handsome, Josh Duhamel,  plays the neighbor’s prodigal son and is hmmm, let’s just say, easy on the eyes!

This is an excellent family movie and kids will love it. The target audience is 6 – 12 year old girls.  Adults?  I wouldn’t run out to see this one in the theater unless you have a child.  It’s true family entertainment and will be perfect for a Sunday afternoon or a family movie night, when it comes out on DVD.

Grade:  B
