We need a word for the time spent waiting for health test results.  I’m thinking “test-purgatory”? Test-purgatory means a place between heaven and hell, a state of suffering inhabited by uncertainty, anxiety, and misery.
If you or even worse, your child has a health test that involves waiting days for results, I bet you know exactly what I mean. Â I was just talking to someone today who told me, “I don’t want to borrow trouble but……” Â You can’t help but think about the possible outcomes. Â The doctors percentages swim around your brain, but as long as there’s ANY chance of a negative outcome, you worry.
I’m really excited about a new test for tuberculosis that eliminates the subjectivity and false positives of the 110-year old skin test. Â Two members of my family have received false positive results and had to have chest x-rays to rule out tuberculosis. Â It’s time for something better!
If you haven’t had a tuberculosis (TB) test lately, let me remind you what it’s like. Â You go to the doctor and get a skin puncture. Â Then you go home and wait two days. Â You return to the doctor within 48-72 hours to have them look at the injection site. The basis of the reading of the skin test is the presence or absence and the amount of swelling. Â A negative result does not necessarily ensure that you don’t have TB and a positive result doesn’t necessarily mean you do have TB. Â HUH? Â I know, right. Â How is that a test?
Well, good news, the FDA has approved a TB Blood Test that has results within 24 hours and the results are much more reliable. Â The benefits of the TB blood test include:
- one visit to the doctor instead of two
- faster results
- less time worrying
- more reliability
- no cross reaction with a previous TB vaccination
- Only a 3 ml draw of blood

That’s great about he ew blood test. Years ago my son & I were tested with the two day wait for results. Both my son and I had false poitive tests that resulted in more testing. Thanks for your post. It’s nice to know they finally have a new test.

That is awesome. I’ve been exposed to TB twice, and I hated the waiting, and each time I ended up having to get the chest xrays coz I’m allergic to everything, lol.

TB is no joke, so everyone should make sure that you are inoculated. I worked in the dirtiest of all hospital departments, the housekeeping department, so I have seen some really bad cases. For your sake, make sure that you are ready.
