When I redecorated the living room in our home, we went from “sixties church lobby” to “cozy and chic”.  Seriously, I know it was church-lobby, because when I sold our sofa in a garage sale, guess who bought it?  Yup, a church.  For their lobby.  Ew.  I’m embarrassed.  Okay, moving on…

I scoured blogs before settling on a decorating plan.  Blogs are the best place to find ideas, of course!  Have you ever read Nesting Place?  I had met “the nester” at a conference and she was so kind.  Since then, I’ve loved her blog as a source of inspiration.  Speaking of inspiration, on HGTV, I noticed that the designers would often find an “inspiration piece” and then work everything around the colors and textures of that piece.  But I didn’t have an inspiration piece!  And I like different colors and textures depending on the season.

Living in the Midwest, we have seasons.  Not just, seasons, actually, it’s more like S-E-A-S-O-N-S.   We go from very hot, very lush greens to frigid icy, whites and blues.  Being near the beach, I’ve always loved coastal decorating with whitewash woods and watery blues.  But it looks silly in January in Chicago.  Sand and sun are the last things on your mind when there’s a blizzard outside.  Christmas here is a White Christmas most of the time – it just doesn’t go with coastal style.  But the same is true with the dark browns and rich ambers of fall.  They don’t go with the spring green of Chicago.  What to do?

Well, thanks to The Nester’s advice, I decorated my living room like this…  The permanent, costly pieces are in black and white.  The furniture is white, the curtains are white, the sofa is black, the chairs are black & white.  They provide a neutral background for my seasonal accessorizing.  The pillows, the coffee table chachkeys, the art  – the easily changeable, less expensive things are in a seasonal color palette.  For example, I have a photograph of a beach walk for the summer.  It’s blues and grays and very seasonal.  It feels good in the summer, paired with my blue tray and painted glassware in bright summer colors.

But at this time of year in the fall, I swap it all out for a black/brown/gray mirror piece, brown and black pottery, a simple brown bowl of apples.  Nothing says fall like crisp, red apples.  Put them in a bowl on the table and add a cozy Simply Vanilla scented Renuzit air freshener.  Mmmmm, can’t you feel the cozy?  And talk about budget friendly?!  The apples are less than a dollar a piece and so is the Renuzit Adjustable Air Freshener!  Use a bowl you have in the house and voila!  Seasonal decorating.  You have just been put in the fall mood.
