Leatherneck Turtle Hatchling

Leatherback turtle nest and eggs

Fun Facts about Sea Turtles:

  • The largest leatherback turtle ever found weighed over 2,000 pounds!
  • Leatherback turtles have been around for more than 150 million years!  They survived the extinction of the dinosaurs, but are an endangered species right now.
  • These turtles travel!  Researchers recently tracked a turtle travelling 12,000 miles, from Indonesia to Oregon.
  • A newly hatched baby turtle is called a hatchling.
  • It is not known how long sea turtles live in the wild, but scientists think their life span may be as long as 100 years.
  • Developing sea turtle hatchlings do not have gender chromosomes.  The temperature of their nest determines the sex of the baby turtle.
  • It is estimated that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood.
