Small Business Saturday 11/24 – Where I’m Looking Forward to Shopping for Holiday Gifts

This Saturday, November 24th, is Small Business Saturday, a day to support small businesses that invigorate the economy and keep communities thriving.  American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010 to remind us all of the benefits of shopping at independently-owned small businesses, on the biggest shopping weekend of the year.

Our Chamber of Commerce put out a Holiday Gift Guide with selections from the small businesses in our area.  Here are some of the fun selections I’m looking forward to visiting on Saturday.  I hope they give you ideas for yours!

Local Jewelry Designers

Local jewelry designers create one-of-a-kind locally-inspired pieces that make exquisite gifts!  We are on Lake Michigan and have an amazing designer that will create jewelry from beach glass that you can bring in, or choose from selections she has already created.

Florists in your hometown will often have local plants and flowers for unique gift-giving suggestions.  One of our local shops also has incredible Christmas displays.

Dance Studios

Would anyone on your list love dance lessons for Christmas?  Anyone getting married in 2013 or attending a special wedding and needs to brush up on their skills?  How about a dance studio gift certificate?

Salons and Spas

What woman wouldn’t love a spa day gift certificate?  Or if you have a difficult to buy relative, how about a gift certificate to the salon where she goes for hair cuts?  Great idea for older relatives that are hard to choose gifts for!   And when you’re doing your rushing around with all the hectic holiday preparation, how about treating yourself to a relaxing manicure, pedicure, or massage?

Garden Center

Local garden centers are more than just for spring and summer!  They offer an array of garden-inspired gifts that are perfect for the holiday season.  Have a bird lover on your gift list?  How about a Christmas ornament featuring a local bird.

Parks and Recreation

Annual passes to local attractions are a great gift for a family.  If you are doing Christmas traveling, a nice thank you for your overnight host is a pass to their local state park!

Framing Store

Specially framed family photos make the perfect gift for relatives and close friends!  Your local framing store can help you choose just the right matte and frame to showcase your selection.  Perhaps an old photo of family members that are no longer with us would make a touching gift.  Look through old treasures and add a special item from that person, a rosary or jewelry, and create an heirloom shadow box.

A tip from my Chamber – “Shopping locally can mean less time away from family, less money spent on gas or shipping, and less stress.”

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of American Express. I received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
