1. When you travel by car or rv, you see so much of the countryside. I love to see the ways that different parts of our great country live. There are subtle but fun differences in the way people design and maintain their homes. When we travel, we always talk about the similarities and differences in architecture, food, decorating, etc. And you can run across attractions, you would otherwise have missed –
3. Appreciate nature. The great outdoors is amazingly beautiful. Wherever you live, whether it’s mountainous or flat; cold or hot; nature is beautiful. There is nothing like a starry sky, away from the lights of a city. I love the woods. Around us, the seasons change, and it is amazing to see what the woods look like in spring, summer, fall and winter. Hiking is a great exercise and gives you more chances to talk. For some reason, it’s easier to approach big topics, like life goals, when you are faced with the greatness of nature. The “little things” tend to fall away and leave room for discussing the big, important things. And your patience increases when you are not watching a clock, timing this and that.
3. Cozy, cozy, and cozy. I love it when it rains and our family is all cozy in our mini-van or RV listening to the raindrops. It’s just a cozy atmosphere where you can talk – maybe even about things you wouldn’t otherwise share.
A bit of advice if you are considering a road trip this summer – listen to the Boy Scouts and “Be Prepared.”
According to family travel expert Emily Kaufman, “The Travel Mom,†families are starting to think past the backyard “staycation†and are rediscovering the freedom of the open road. Kaufman shares the following tips for a fun and safe family road trip:
- Create a boredom bag. Convert a hanging travel cosmetic case into a case full of fun and hang it from the seat back in front of the kids’ seats. Consider creating fun works of art with Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel Candy before snacking on them!
- Take your trip “online.†From GPS systems to phone applications, trips are no longer a navigation nightmare.
- Think through the snacks you pack. Avoid packing snacks that are easy to spill like juice boxes or snacks that melt. Try plastic bottles with sports tops and bring along Twizzlers Candy or Twizzlers Nibs Candy – they are easy to share and don’t melt, making them the perfect car ride treat.
So what are your favorite things about a family road trip? Any planned for this summer? Where are you headed? Are you packing Twizzlers?

I love roadtrips! In fact, in two days my boyfriend and I (plus our little dog too) are going on a two day road trip to my parents Cabin in British Columbia. We love blasting the music and trying to make up stories of the interesting people we pass. I just like road trips for the fact that when you are driving you see so much of the world around you and not that you are “unplugged” from the world. Best. Part. Ever.
Great post! I’m taking my 2-year-old and my best friend’s 2 teens to Charleston in July to review an Inn there. Trying to line up reviews for hotels along the way and some tourist attractions too, but even if we have to just do the 12 hour drive to and from Charleston we’ll do it, we’re really excited! :)

I like taking road trip too and I like to take them in the car and using the scenic route instead of the fast version.
You see so many more interesting things that make memories.
Stumbled you because I thought this was stumble worthy :)
