Are you a wine aficionado?
Do you know someone who loves good wine?
If you are invited to someone’s house for dinner, do you often wish you could bring a bottle of wine and
be able to talk about the type and specifics of the wine?
Are you overwhelmed by the selection of wine at your local store?
Do you find yourself walking out of a store without the bottle of wine that was on your list,
just because you didn’t know which one to buy?
If you answered, “Yes†to any of those questions, a wine club may be the thing for you! I received my second shipment of wine from California Wine Club.  I thought I would like it, but I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy it.
When I originally read that a newsletter would be enclosed with the wine shipment from California Wine Club, it didn’t make a big impression and when I first saw it, I thought it was one of those “throw-away†things you get in almost every shipment, selling another product. Then I took the time to open it and was very happily surprised. There are interesting facts in “Uncorked”, the California Wine Club newsletter, about not only the wine included in the shipment, but also wine producing in general. It’s a very easy and interesting read.
For example, in the one I recently received, there is a bulleted list of interesting factoids about the wine from Castoro Cellars that was in this shipment. Easy to understand facts about the flavors that I could remember and enhance my enjoyment of the wine. I plan on taking the Pinot Noir as a “hostess gift†and I love that I’ll be able to point out the hallmark of the Castoro’s Pinot Noir is the fruit aromas including black cherry.
If your like me, you’ve heard your friends or people in movies talk about a particular year a wine was harvested. Now you can do it too. The Gewurz bottle of wine is made from grapes that were hand harvested in September, 2010. The cold, slow, and long fermentation resulted in the wine’s floral characteristics. The grape originated in France, but was exported to Paso Robles, California. All this comes from the inside cover of the newsletter!
There’s further conversational tidbits about enjoying wine at holiday feasts.
- The British Medical Journal reported online about two studies indicating wine is the best choice for rich holiday fare. Wine improves the digestion or rich, fatty foods. And this is one of my favorites :)
- A study by Spain’s University of Navarra’s Department of Preventative Medicine showed that wine drinkers are less likely to gain weight than beer and spirits drinkers.
Depending on your interest, whether you are looking for some dinner conversation or interested in extensive details, the California Wine Club newsletter that accompanies the wine delivery is interesting reading!
And to finish, here is a great toast from the newsletter if your family tends to “over do†the eating, drinking or drama:
“May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been,
the foresight to know where you are going,
and the insight to know when you have gone too far.â€
According to an email I received from California Wine Club, the next shipment is going to be their best of the year! I can’t wait to see… and taste!… the next offerings!
