Well, what do think?
How much weight did I gain after spending a week at Walt Disney World?
Here’s my weigh-in just before we left:Â 164.0 pounds.
I read tips from Nutrisystem before we left, and I packed some of the Nutrisystem breakfast muffins and the “bars” that are easy, portable meals. I would say I ate four bars and had three muffins while we were on the trip. The rest of the time I tried to make good choices. “Tried” being the optimal word, hehehe. When faced with all the delicious food, especially at the catered events, I have to admit I did stray. Some. Hey, what happens at Disney, stays at Disney!
Ten Tips to Keep Your Weight Loss Plan on Track While Traveling
- Don’t give up your food journal/meal planner. Take it with you and keep writing down everything you eat. It’s a great motivator to stay on track and there are even times when I will turn down a quick snack, ie piece of candy, just because I don’t want to write it down!
- Look for healthy options on the menu. Generally, fresh foods and simple (ie grilled) foods are best. Remember to be careful with salad “fixin’s”. Sometimes the add-ons and dressing can add quite a few calories!
- Bring food with you! If you are on the Nutrisystem program, there are many portable options like the muffins and bars that I took with me. If you also have access to a microwave, there are unlimited choices! Not only will this save pounds but it will also save you money!
- When eating out, sticking to healthy portion sizes can be difficult. If you can, share a meal with a friend. If that’s not an option, ask for a “to go” box when you get your meal and immediately separate a healthy portion. Put the rest straight into the box.
- Eat healthy snacks. Try not to get too hungry, eat small healthy snacks during the day. When I skip any meals, or get overly hungry, I make bad choices.
- Drink lots of water. Especially when traveling by air and/or going to a warmer climate, it’s very important to stay hydrated. Ask for a slice of lemon or lime in your water, for a pretty and refreshing beverage.
- Enjoy the walking! If you’re like me, you walk much more when you are on vacation. Make sure you take comfortable shoes and climate-appropriate clothing. Enjoy the fresh air and exercise!
- Treat yourself. Sounds counter-intuitive, but you are on vacation after all. Don’t completely eliminate special treats – just watch your portions. You can still have that yummy looking strawberry shortcake, just don’t eat the whole thing. Savor a few bites and enjoy it! You’ll avoid getting resentful or frustrating and seriously damaging your weight loss plan.
- Watch your alcohol consumption. Similar to advice about scrumptious desserts, don’t completely abstain if it’s something you truly enjoy and risk a complete meltdown of your diet. But, don’t over-indulge. Order one drink and sip slowly. It’s more of a waste to drink too much that to leave some in the glass. Consider lower-calorie options like a lite beer or a cocktail with seltzer rather than juice.
- Eat breakfast! It’s tempting when traveling to skip breakfast. You might be waking up later than normal, breakfast can be expensive, you are rushing… Lots of excuses, but you will make healthier choices and keep your metabolism in a good place, if you eat a healthy breakfast. If you are trying to watch your budget – this is a perfect time to pull out your Nutrisystem shelf-stable foods. Delicious and handy!
So, how did I do?

It IS so hard to eat healthfully when on vacation, isn’t it? I loved our healthy meal though – I could eat like that all day long! Great job on keeping the weight under control while at Disney. I’m not so sure I did the same….
And I may have missed you at Disney, but I’ll catch you at the BBSummit for sure!
Way to go! Great tips! I am a travel agent specializing in Disney vacations so we are frequent Disney guests. I typically either stay the same or lose just a bit on disney World vacations, probably from drinking so much water and walking so much! Cruises are another story…I’ve learned to keep that in mind when I pack otherwise I end up with things feeling a bit snug in the waist at the end of our trip!
Yay! Good for you, Kelly! That’s awesome!!
Wow! That’s awesome! and, I liked the toes! ;)
Pretty much blew through your entire list. Haven’t got on scale. Kudos to you!
Congrats! I’m sure that was hard to keep things under control while on vacation. Keep up the good work. :D
Lost 2 pounds while at Disney? Amazing! I know that you did a lot of walking, but still, you are to be commended :)
Good job!! I’d love to try Nutrisystem!
That is awesome!
YAY for you!!! those are great tips. i especially like the one about getting a to go box and putting it away BEFORE you eat!
Major kudos to you, mama! Actually losing weight while you’re on vacation? Remarkable. Good for you!
Thanks for the tips and congrats on your travel weight loss. Go you!
I actually lost a few pounds of weight when we went on our Disney trip because of all the walking we did – from open to close we were at the parks. :-)
