Have you suffered from a serious illness recently or had a broken bone?  If you have, you probably know all about the unexpected costs.  But if like me, you’ve been fortunate not to have had anything recently, you may be quite surprised!

We think if we have insurance, we don’t have to worry but the reality is, there are many costs that your insurance will not cover.  For example, something as simple as covering the costs of childcare when you need someone to watch your children while you go to physical therapy or doctor appointments.  If you are unable to work because of an illness or accident, the costs very quickly mount.  Here are some of the things you might not have thought of:

  • special travel arrangements since you may be unable to walk or drive
  • copays
  • physical therapy
  • physical therapy equipment
  • braces or special bandages

Aflac has a new “Real Cost Calculator” that shows you the actual out-of-pocket costs of illness and accidents from Breast Cancer to a Broken Leg.  I was shocked!  The unexpected costs really add up.

When I was working outside the home, I had supplemental insurance from Aflac and it gave me a measure of comfort to know that I wouldn’t have to worry if I had an accident or my child or husband were injured or sick.

A few years ago, my cousin was struck by a terrible disease called acute transverse myelitis.  It paralyzed her from the waist down and she spent years in physical therapy before she could walk again.  Insurance covered some of the expenses but not things as simple as the gas costs of driving her to therapy three times a week.  With the cost of gas, that very quickly added up to a significant amount of money.  Then the modifications that needed to be made to her home.  Not to mention the equipment she need to do the exercises necessary to regain her health.

As there are more and more changes to health care, I know less and less about what is covered by insurance and what isn’t.  It’s very confusing, to say the least.  A supplemental insurance like Aflac, can help with families stay afloat in times of great stress.  If you or your child are ill, the last thing you need is to be worrying about finances.

If you’d like to try the Real Cost Calculator yourself, just go to the Aflac website.  Make sure you’re sitting down, you will be surprised!
