My laptop is two years old and because of all the wear-and-tear, I know I’m going to be needing a new one this year.  Time to start the research!  I’ve looked into what you need to know, so hopefully I can save you some time and share what I learned.  Here are some questions to start with:

Consider What You Use Your Laptop For

  • Do you use your laptop primarily for internet access?
  • Is gaming a priority for you?
  • Do you stream movies or TV?
  • Do you use audio and/or listen to music?
  • Do you store photos and videos on your laptop?

Where You Use Your Laptop

  • How much do you travel with your laptop?
  • Do you primarily use your laptop sitting at a desk or sitting on the couch?
  • Are you the only user or do you often have two or more people sharing your screen?
  • Do you use your laptop in different rooms of your house ie for cooking in the kitchen, social media in the family room and email in the office?

Answering those questions will help you determine how important the different features of your new laptop will be.  For example, if you carry your laptop back-and-forth to work or travel with it extensively, then weight is important.  If you stay home, then not-so-much.

I’ve been looking at laptops at Best Buy.  When you need new technology the people at Best Buy can not only tell you about the latest and greatest, they can help you find the technology that is best suited to your particular needs.  Laptops are not one-size-fits-all.  Sure, if you have all the money in the world, you can just get the best of everything and several devices.  But if you are the average person, you don’t want to spend money on features you don’t need.  Best Buy staff can help you determine that.
