‘Tis the Season of Thankfulness – I’m Thankful for Health! How Our Thanksgiving Tradition Teaches Gratitude!

The Thanksgiving holiday is coming in a few days and I’ve been spending the whole month of November thinking of daily reasons to be grateful.  Thanksgiving is not only a day, but a season of thankfulness.

When we adopted Rosie, in many ways we were creating a family.  I spent a lot of time looking for ideas and examples of family traditions.  Family traditions that would create memories for her of childhood, connected-ness, and love.  I wanted to associate many of them with holidays and celebrations.

One of the Thanksgiving traditions that I started was asking friends and family to tell me what they were thankful for.  I wrote their answers each on a paper “leaf” that we use as a table decoration.  During our Thanksgiving dinner, we read some of the “leaves” and think about that family member and why we are thankful for them!

The most popular answer, by far, is health.  Have you ever heard someone say, “With your health, you can do anything, but without it, nothing else matters.”?  It doesn’t matter if you have love, money, or any of the other things we wish for, if you aren’t healthy to enjoy it.
