Top 4 Ways to Protect Your Family from Colds and Flu

We went to get Rosie’s hair cut today because tomorrow morning we’re getting pictures taken of her in her Halloween costume.  Our usual routine is to go out to lunch and to Locks of Fun.  My mom comes with us and we make a “girls day out” of it.  But today Grandma couldn’t come because she has a cold!  We missed her!

Are you or someone you know missing out on the fun activities of fall because of the cold or flu? According to the Center for Disease Control, flu season starts in October. Here are the top four ways to protect your family from getting the flu:

1.  Wash your hands often with soap and water.  If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand rub.  Most experts think that colds and flu are spread by contact with a virus either droplets or by touching a surface that has a virus on it.  Children are especially likely to be exposed at school.  Encourage your child to wash their hands at recess, lunch, and snack.  Put a bottle of hand sanitizer in their book bag and suggest they not only use it, but share it with their friends.  For more information:  CDC – Clean Hands

2.  Take time to get a flu vaccine. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone over the age of 6 months and names this as the best way to protect yourself from the flu.  Vaccination is especially important for anyone who falls into a high-risk category.  People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.  For more information:  CDC – Seasonal Flu Shot

3.  Get plenty of sleep and eat a healthy diet. 4.  Try to minimize contact with people who may be spreading colds and flu. If you are attending an event with a large number of people, try to notice who is around you.  If someone is coughing or sneezing, avoid close contact with them.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because that is how germs are spread.  When one of your family members falls ill, keep them separated from other members of the family, as much as possible.
