Super Bowl Sunday?  Visions of fried chicken wings… burgers….. chips…. dip…. cookies…  If you are trying to lose weight like I am, you may be worrying about what the party goodies are going to do to your waistline.

Here are a few tips to survive the Super Bowl Sunday Food Blitz with your scale numbers intact:

  • Keep the food in the kitchen. Bypass the temptation to put food on the coffee table in front of the tv.  By putting the food in the kitchen, you avoid random unconscious snacking.  If you need to get up in order to fill your plate, you’ll eat less!
  • Drink a lot! Ha, I bet you never thought I would say that!  No, don’t drink a lot of beer – make healthy choices.  Stock up on beverages that you enjoy but are low calorie.  If you don’t usually buy flavored, sparkling water, now is the time to splurge.  Have attractive, low calorie choices on hand like a pitcher of ice water with floating lemon and orange slices.  Put that on the coffee table, so it will be the choice you reach for during the game.  If Super Bowl = Beer and there is way around it, choose a light beer with less than 100 calories.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast. Don’t skimp on your breakfast thinking that you’ll save calories to use later at the party.  If you eat a healthy breakfast, not only will you kick start your metabolism but you will also be less hungry = less likely to binge on party treats.  Cynthia Sass said that sumo wrestlers intentionally skip breakfast because it slows their metabolism and helps them bulk up.  I don’t know about you, but bulking up is not something I EVER want to do *shiver*.  Now whenever it’s getting late in the morning and I haven’t eaten, I picture a sumo wrestler.  Thanks for that mental picture, Cynthia, *sarcastically said*.
  • Make healthy choices. Include a large salad and fill up on that before you reach for pizza.  Have lots of veggies in your salad, so it’s substantial and remember the low-calorie dressing options.

INTERCEPTIONS and OTHER DEFENSIVE PLAYS

It’s fourth down and the Red, high-fat; high calorie team is playing the Blue, healthier choice team…

…the quarterback, Potato Chips, throws a pass…  QUICK!  Defensive players, Carrots and Celery, jump in and intercept the ball.

…the running back, Sour Cream/Cream Cheese Dip, is headed for the first-down…  QUICK! Defensive tackle, Fresh Salsa, saves the play.

…the quarterback, Chocolate Chip Cookies arm goes back to throw… QUICK! Blitz with Fresh Fruit!

Crunchy Snack Mix tosses the ball to Cheese Curls with a flea flicker play…  QUICK! You are all over that and Pretzels are credited with the touchdown-saving tackle.

Thick-Crust Meat Pizza is kicking the field goal… QUICK!  Thin-Crust Veggie  Pizza with Low-Fat Cheese blocks that kick!

Great post – my way to avoid temptation is to stay away…Thankfully, I am not a football fan… So when my husband goes to his Superbowl party.. I’m staying home with my chick flicks and low carb snacks..

    Love to you

The snow kept me from a last minute trip to the meat section at the supermarket this year.

The fresh salsa was a really great tip, thank you!!! Also, having pretzels instead of the cheese curls. I’m not strong enough to have fresh fruit over a chocolate chip cookie yet. Hi! I’m here from the stumble blog hop and I’m following your blog now. I hope you’ll come visit and follow my blog to (I’m tiny and new) Thanks!
