Mariah Stewart The Long Way Home

About the Story

This is another book from Mariah Stewart set in the lovely town of St. Dennis, Maryland.  The theme is living through scandal and whether others hold you accountable for the actions of your parent.  Ellie Chapman, the main character, is the daughter of a criminal investment manager who cheated innocent families out of their life savings.  Although Ellie had no part in it, she feels that the anger and emotions the victims feel will spill over to her.  When Ellie moves to the home she inherited from her late mother, she uses a variation of her name and keeps her identity a secret.  Attorney, Jesse Enright (one of the main characters in Mariah Stewart’s “Hometown Girl”) is the only one who knows she didn’t buy the home from the much-loved, Lilly Cavanaugh.

The home has been well cared for over the time it stood empty by neighbor/handy man/contractor Cameron O’Connor.  Young and handsome, Cameron O’Connor!  Can you see where this is going?  Ellie wonders why Cameron makes such an effort and there are many-layered reasons.

As Ellie learns more and more about her mother and the inhabitants of St. Dennis, secrets come to light and…. of course, romance blooms.

About the Author

Mariah Stewart knows romance!  She has written twenty-nine novels of contemporary romance and romantic suspense as a New York Times bestselling author.  Living with her husband and their dogs amid the rolling hills and Amish farms of southern Chester County, Pa, she gardens, reads and enjoys country life.

“The Long Way Home” is part of a series, but you can read it as a stand-alone.

My Take

The main plot line of the romance between Ellie and Cameron is predictable, but there are many other parts of the story that were delightful surprises!  It was heart-warming to read the history and reputation of the inhabitants of the house Ellie finds herself renovating.  Reading books like “The Long Way Home” are very refreshing and give hope in these days when it’s difficult to even watch the news anymore.  An escape into the community of St. Dennis, is a pleasurable way to spend some time.  If we can’t find such a town, or have the time to go there *smile*, it’s encouraging to read about it.

When I reviewed Mariah Stewart’s other book, “Hometown Girl”, I talked about how she paints a picture with her words.  That is my favorite thing about this author.  She pulls me in to the story and I can “see” so clearly what she is describing that I feel like I am there.

Make a cup of tea, find a comfy chair in the warm sunshine, relax and read “The Long Way Home”.
